WESTERN MIDGETS HEAD FOR BAKERSFIELD SATURDAY; MITCHELL GRABS ALTAMONT MIDGET MAIN

Matt Mitchell of Yorba Linda, Calif. heads for Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway this Saturday with one thought in mind – wresting the USAC Western Midget Series point lead away from his teammate Johnny Rodriguez.

Mitchell trails Rodriguez, of Elk Grove, Calif., by only 12 points, with Scott Pierovich of Alamo, Calif. only six more behind. Saturday’s Bakersfield program offers 74 total points.

Mitchell passed Rodriguez on the 22nd lap of Saturday’s 30-lap race at Altamont Motorsports Park in Tracy, Calif. and sped to his first series triumph. Dallas Melby, Paul Zimmerly, Pierovich and Justin Melton completed the “top-five” at the checkered flag. Rodriguez led the first 21 laps of the race.

Pierovich fared the best of the top-three in the standings when the Midgets visited Bakersfield in March, finishing eighth in a race won by Danny Stratton. Rodriguez and Mitchell failed to post qualifying times for the event and Mitchell was the first to drop out of the feature.

I will take the over but by 1 car. I am expecting 15. From the people I have talked to there should be 15. Sucks BCRA is having a dirt midget race on the same day.
