Do any tracks in the U.S. do anything like they do in Australia. For instance the first story on Sprint Car World today is about Steven Lines and his new team winning first time out of the box. Won his first heat race from the front row, came in 6th from starting 12th in his 2nd heat, giving him the pole for the feature. Is expense and the danger of more crashes the two main reasons for say the WoO or All Star series using something like this or is it the length of the show or what? I know some drivers don't like what they do at Port Royal or is it the Grove and I'm ignorant about the situation out there, just read a little about it, maybe it was a year old Flat Out magazine, not sure.

Might have been the lower car counts "back in the day". The fans got to see more racing. Or, might have come from some British tradition in some other game or sport. If you only have 15 to 20 cars, 3 or 4 heats and a feature wouldn't be enough to make the fans happy. If you have 30 or 40 cars, it would make it tough to run 2 heats per car.

saw it at Oscaloosa when usac ran a couple years ago in Terry McCarl run show. I can not remember how many cars but it was in mid 20. I liked it and would be thing to do and not run some bomber street class as a filler

The newly formed Mach 1 360 series in Pennsylvania uses a 2 heat format.

Most Sprint car meetings in Australia run two heats per car.

A lot run time trials, followed by heat races, a dash, B Main and A Main.

Fairer to the driver and also the fans, I would say.

Many years ago when I raced karts we always used this format for our weekly shows. We didn't time but drew for starting spot in our first heat. Starting positions for our second heat were just the reverse of your first heat no matter where you finished in the first one. Total points earned in both heats determined your starting position in the A main. It was straight up based on heat race total points. I always thought it was a very fair way to do it.

Sounds like the Chili Bowl format. We need more of that.

It is a great format but on the half miles 8 lap heats and trackers smaller than one half mile ten lap heats and reverse the whole field for the second session of heats,do away with the consy and "B" mains most of those are just crash fests anyway. It is time tracks considered doing this and if you don't make the top 24 in points for night, load it up. I get tired of the long drag it out scene,go race and go home.

They did something like that last summer at Oskaloosa (was it Ultimate Challenge, or Front Row?) 2 heats, & I think (?) it was draw for first heat, then reverse it for heat 2. What could be more fair?

I think passing points might have had something to do with it too, not sure, an Aussie fan was trying to explain it & I couldn't quite understand. Someone mentioned something about All Star or ASCS format????

ASCS NW has used a two heat format a few times when they have had low car counts. First set of heats by pill draw. Then completely invert for the second set. Makes for a good show when your low on cars.

We have show every year at I-44 riverside speedway called the mini sprint nationals in Oklahoma city 6 classes of mini sprints usually around 175-200 cars 2 day show on Friday we run 2 heats. Same format pill draw for first and the second is inverted. Then on Saturday run b's and a's. It makes for a long show usually ending around 2am each night

Marysville Raceway Park in Northern California uses the 2 heat format. Makes for a better show for the fans, if you ask me.

Some of the formats Include Time Trials to set heat line-ups, QT to rear, (Normally 10th) Run one round of heats, then 2nd round of heats they switch rows so QT would star 9th in the 2nd heat same row, you start one heat from inside row, other heat outside row, in the same row, lots of points are given out in TT therefore whoever time trials well dont really have to win a heat from rear but just pass a few cars in each heat and most likely end up starting A in top 6 depending is someone else who TT well had a Great heat.

Heats are more fun to watch than Time Trials, & dual "reversed" heats could not be more fair.

Only thing I like about Time Trials is that you get to see cars one at a time & learn drivers, if you don't know them....

Time Trials are my favorite part of a race night besides the Main Event. You get to focus solely on one single car at a time. The drivers get the spotlight on them for that minute they are on the track. And its all about running a good line and being the fastest car. The two heats format gets boring sometimes but i have also seen some great races with that format.

This format is one of the best ways to find out who has the best car before the features but it does have its disadvantages if you have a track that hasnt quite taken shape yet and there is no passing but this format does almost guarantee most of the dust will be blown of in time to be able to watch the feature.
