I have an old halibrand quick change with solid open axle, what would you do to use it in an Anglia street rod project? any help out there? or am I better off selling it and getting something different?

Well, if you don't mind incorporating birdcages in your rear suspension, I'd just run it as is. It would be way cool, and most street rod guys wouldn't even know what it is. I've had 2 pro street cars, both with spools in the rear, and it never gave me any problems other than the rear tires chirping a little on a tight turn. Those were pretty narrow rearends though, so it might be worse with a wider one. Another thing you could do would be convert it over to a late-model type rear, which would allow you to put a differential in it. Not sure if they make one for a Halibrand, but a lot of QC stuff interchanges.

if it is a sprint rear end with an offset you might have problems.
i am far from knowledgeable in the street rod area, but i would think a set up with axle housings would be better suited to your application. no matter if it were a locked type setup or not.

Would that be a bolt on conversion? if so any ideas of availablity and cost?

like i said, if you have a live axle open tube rear end that was intended for sprint car use it more than likely has an offset axle. i don't know just what you have or from what time period it is.
as far as a bolt on conversion, that is not a question that can be answered in a straightforward manner without knowing exactly what you have. also i think anything that would need to be done would be more than just "bolt on". you say it is an old halibrand. to convert it to an application with housings would require replacing the live axle assembly and center section side plates with a third member and side plates designed for axle shafts, and getting the correct axle housings that would work for your application.
are you looking to put a live axle in the car or just looking to put in a quick change type?
you might be able to trade someone for something that would work.
you might also be able to swap the offset live axle (if that is what you have) for a straight up live axle if that is what you really want. with a live axle you run into other potential suspension mounting and geometry issues.
to indy and beyond!!

I have not yet found any info about interchangability (sp?) between different brands of QC rears, but I did find this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=148241 It is 4 pages of information and discussion about Halibrands. Maybe you can get some useful info out of it. If I find out anything more specific, I'll post it. Anybody know if Winters side bells will fit a Halibrand rear?
