Priolo Wins The Big Dance
By Darren O'Dea
DAVID Priolo threatened all weekend he was going to win the World Series Sprintcars Grand Final at the Perth Motorplex and after some bad luck on the first night, he held on to take the emotional win in front of a massive crowd on Saturday night.
It was part of a WA 1-2 with Shaun Bradford second and David Murcott third.
Priolo set quick time on the Friday night in the special paint scheme paying tribute to John Day's 50 years in the sport and it was even more fitting considering Day was injured in a fireworks incident on the Friday night.
"All the heartache I have gone through this last month I think is a prelude to this moment right now," Priolo said.
"It is surreal.
"I couldn't be any prouder of the achievement my guys have done.
"To do it for John Day is special."
Bradford gave it his all but just came up short.
"I went to the bottom too early there," he said.
"I gave it my best…the last month has been hell going east.
"Now we have come home and found our car speed again."
Murcott was happy to be on the podium but said track knowledge played into the hands of the front runners.
"That was pretty cool," he said.
"That was one of the best races I have had here…those boys did a hell of a job…we are happy with third."
Priolo and Bradford both got their mounts up on their back wheels at the start of the 30-lapper and seconds later Ryan Farrell pulled up on the main straight with a flat right rear tyre.
He got a restart, albeit at the rear of the field.
Priolo closed in on Bradford in lapped traffic and pulled off a great high line move at mid race distance to take the lead.
There were some great battles right through the pack as the drivers thrilled the massive crowd in the house for the series grand final.
Robbie Farr went over on the back straight with six laps remaining in a massive crash and American Shane Stewart had nowhere to go, flipping beside the Q7 machine while James McFadden did well to miss the upside down car on the other side.
On the restart it was Priolo who led away from Bradford, Murcott, Tatnell, McFadden, Lines and Kendrick.
The WA boys were duking it out at the front, not giving an inch of room but it was Priolo who took the win by .459 of a second.
Brooke Tatnell was fourth and followed over the line by Steven Lines, Luke Dillon, Jason Kendrick, Ian Madsen, Cameron Gessner, Max Dumesny, Jamie Maiolo, Trevor Reynolds and Ken Sartori.
Stewart led home the B Main from Dumesny, Madsen, Sartori, Walker and Brad Maiolo to make the transfer into the A Main.
Heat race wins went to Rob Watson, Dylan Jenkins, Jason Johnson, Tatnell, Luke Dillon and McFadden.
Friday night winner Cameron Gessner, who suffered damage in the first heat race, started on the front row for heat seven, but contact with Priolo saw him come to a half with significant damage and record his second DNF of the night.
In the Dashes it was Priolo who progressed through from bronze, to silver and eventually gold to secure the pole position.
