It was the roadsters and the "big cars" that morphed into sprint cars. There's a very good article in SC&M magazine that talks about how this "middle division" evolved. I watched the old CRA roadsters as a little kid, and more than a few of us remember when, or have the knowledge that CRA originally stood for the California Roadster Association.. Dick Wallen has a book called, Roaring Roadsters The Road to Indy http://www.racingclassics.com/roaring_roadsters_indy.html
S Cali and AZ, and N.M. with the NMMRA as well, is still non wing traditional sprint car country, and we didn't have to take the wings off a "super" modified or anything like that to make a sprinter, because they came from the roadsters and the big cars that ran tracks like Legion Ascot in Southern Cali, and the fairground 1 miles tracks in S Cali and AZ.. Don't get me wrong, we had a good bunch of supers, but that's certainly not where the sprint car came from..... One of the first real sprint car tracks in S Cali was Carrell Speedway and Judge Carrell & Christopher J.C. Agajanian were the driving forces behind both tracks, (Ascot & Carrell) and the CRA itself. Sprint cars were introduced in 1953 and the name was changed in 1957 to the California Racing Association, or CRA... The supers like Hank Arnolds famous twister were in a class by themselfs.
Now some might say that a lot of different type cars were called sprint cars shortly after they started running at less than the championship distance of 100 miles, because of the shorter distance; but most people, and myself, only think of a true sprint car looking like the one's in the pictures below.
1953 Hilligass Sprint car..
1948 Hilligass sprinter..
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

Reference Thad Dosher: "in the hall of fame" Thad- a former winner of the Knoxville Nationals has not been inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum located in Knoxville, Iowa. Thad, a good open wheel racer may be an inductee in another racing hall of fame but at this time he's not yet an inductee in the NSCHoF&M.

You'll like this Bet n Housen. http://www.indyroadsters.webs.com/apps/blog/show/1610714-the-novi-roadsters- and I'm sure you know Tony drove one.....These cars, also, made a rare appearance, away from the Indianapolis Speedway, at Atlanta in 1965, driven by Hurtubise and Tinglestad
