Mixed weekend: Kerry Madsen was out early but his team mate Jason Kendrick took the win. See photograph update on Wednesday.
IT was only a matter of time before it happened and tonight at the Perth Motorplex Jason Kendrick finally broke through for his first major win in Sprintcars, claiming the 25-lap Christmas Cup from rookie Trent Pigdon and Ben Ellement.
It was just the Christmas present the young throttle stomper was after and followed his win in Bunbury the night before.
And he did it in front of a very healthy crowd that was entertained in the annual Christmas event.
“It’s good to win two in a row I guess,” Kendrick said after winning the Watsons Express Transport Sprintcar feature race.
“It has become easier with the team we have got behind us and without them it wouldn’t be possible.”
Kendrick was third quickest in qualifying with a 14.272-second lap, only bettered by Rob Watson (14.167) and Ellement (14.230) before claiming a second and a third in his heats, giving him pole position alongside David Priolo.
The son of high-profile engine builder Geoff Kendrick is in his fifth season which many said would see him come of age in the sport and that’s exactly what he has done.
The win also marked the fifth for the team in the AHG Sprintcar series this summer in a dominant start for the two-car team.
Unfortunately Kendrick’s team mate Kerry Madsen was out early after looking promising.
On the first start he charged from eighth to grab the lead but it counted for little after an incident between American Kaley Ghast, Nathan Brady and Daniel Harding.
Next time around Madsen tried a similar move but hit the fence and rubbed out his right rear tyre.
Pigdon was the surprise package, starting from position seven.
He was fourth in qualifying before claiming a ninth and a seventh and in the race that counted he stayed out of trouble for his best result so far.
“It was awesome,” Pigdon said.
“The guys did a great job with the car, it was running real good.”
Ellement started from third and said they were looking for a good result to turn the team’s fortune around.
“That was pretty hard work,” Ellement said.
“We have had a few car troubles and had to change cars after last night…this is better.”
Ellement said they had to nurse the tyres home and they looked pretty average at the end of the night.
The fastest way around the track was on the high line with several drivers tagging the fence.
It was a night of big slide jobs and bold moves and Kendrick was one of the more spectacular but he held on and got the job done in entertaining fashion.
Priolo looked to be the main challenger and also produced some great moves which momentarily got him into the lead but he withdrew from the contest with a flat left rear tyre three laps from home.
Rob Watson junior also looked likely to get a podium finish until he also withdrew late with a blown tyre.
