Brett Miller suffers tough luck at Ocean/Placerville double header

By Gary Thomas

June 5, 2007... Chico youngster Brett Miller had a tough weekend filled with some hard luck during the Golden State Challenge Series double header at Ocean and Placerville Speedway’s. After hurting two motors at Calistoga the previous weekend, Care Free Pools Racing was forced to put in an engine that was down on power for the Ocean/P’ville two night event.

On Friday at Ocean Speedway Brett qualified 15th quick aboard the Care Free Pools, Wolfe Electric, Platinum Powder Coating No.1x. He then started on the front row in his heat race and held off a hard charging Willie Croft until the very last corner when Croft was able to get underneath and steal the win away. A second place finish was good enough though and it set Brett up to start the feature from the eighth row. The 30 lap contest didn’t go as planned as Brett was involved in an incident before a lap could be completed. The front end had some damage but the 1x crew as well as members from other teams were able to fix it, but race officials said that it was Brett’s second stop and he was dq’d from the race. It was pretty confusing, but everyone on the team went on to Placerville with a clear head and looked forward to another night of action.

Placerville started off with Brett being the very last driver to hit the speedway for qualifying and he timed in 17th quickest. He then finished sixth in his heat race and started the feature from the 17th position aboard the Care Free Custom Graphics, JP’s Paint & Body, Jandy Pools, Smartwebsales.com Maxim. The opening lap saw a yellow appear and during the caution Brett pitted with a flat right rear tire after another car had gotten into the side of the 1x while slowing down for the caution lights. The crew was able to get him back out, but a lap after going back green, Brett had nowhere to go as another car had flipped and another had spun in turns three and four. Brett came to a stop and was able to restart but while trying to race his way forward, looped the car in turn four a handful of laps later to put an end to the night.

One of the engines from Calistoga was brought to Placerville on Saturday by RPM Racing Engines, so this coming weekend Brett and the team will have a little more power under the hood to work with.

This Thursday night will see Brett graduate from high school at the Chico State Football Stadium. Following that he’ll be in action at the Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday night for the first time in a few weeks. "The Catfish" currently sits fifth in the Silver Dollar Speedway point standings and the whole team looks forward to getting back to the home track.

On Saturday Care Free Pools Racing will be in action at the Petaluma Speedway for Golden State Challenge Series Round #18. During the GSC event in Petaluma less than a couple weeks ago, Brett qualified second quick and finished sixth in the 30 lap feature. He goes into the night sitting seventh in the current Golden State Challenge Series point standings.

Brett and the team will only get one day off after Petaluma, however, as we’ll be in Medford, Oregon on Monday for another night of competition with the Golden State Challenge Series at the Southern Oregon Speedway. This will be Brett’s first time running in a sprint car at the 1/3 mile Southern Oregon Speedway. He has competed, however, at the go kart track located outside of turn two at the speedway.
