A Newton, Iowa man is charged with first degree theft following a Newton Police Department investigation into a burglary where more than $60,000 worth of custom racing motors were taken from a warehouse building in northeast Newton.

Shawn David Sabin, 27, of 709 E. 13th St. N. was released to appear on the Class C felony charge after being taken into custody at 10:30 a.m. at his residence on Thursday.

According to a release by Newton Police Department, police received a report of a burglary at 1127 E. 12th St. North business name: Custom Sprint Car Parts.

The theft occured on Nov. 10, 2011.

During the course of the police investigation, Sabin was identified as a suspect. With information gathered in the case, Newton police went to his residence where Sabin granted consent to search specific areas of the property.

In the search, officers found two custom racing motors and other racing parts and accessories valued at $63,000 and reported taken during the burglary. Police say Sabin admitted to knowingly possessing the stolen items and was charged with first degree theft for being in possession of the stolen property.

The case remains under investigation and authorities are looking for others possibly involved in the burglary.

p.s. This guys house where they found the engines is like 5 blocks from Custom's building ....prolly just wheeled the stuff down the street to his garage.

It will be interesting to see how this investigation plays out. Who helped him? What were they going to do with the parts and engines?

People never cease to amaze me. I gotta wonder:

A: Why someone would steal that stuff in the first place.

B: Why they think that they can get away with it, regardless of whether they use it themselves or try to sell it.

C: Why they would keep the stolen items stored at their residence?

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they caught this thief but I still can't believe someone is that big of an idiot. They should be locked up because of their stupidity alone. People with that little sense are without question a danger to society.

I am shocked. I thought only out of state visitors caused problems and broke the law around central Iowa. That is what the locals tell me anyways when we visit Knoxville.

While I’m not opposed to sending this guy a few "friendly" messages, just remember, don’t get TOO "friendly". In this day and age, you could end up in more trouble than him, and this too is a crime.

Yeah .... I know what you mean ....smart defense lawyer might get him off that all the hate 'mail' (wall posts) traumatized him ...even though they were after the fact !!!

I mean we live in a country where O.J. and Casey Anthony walked away scott free for stuff tens of thousands times worse than this.

p.s. You hosers that don't live in Iowa ..are so lucky right now .... if I hear or see one more presidential primary ad ....... it is like chinese water torture !!

Does anyone know this guy? Is he known to racing or just a thief that thought he could turn a dollar on some race equipment.

I would vote for crackhead. He wasn't smart enough to turn the stuff before he got caught, and he still had it at his house. Probably stole it while high and has been looking at it for weeks trying to figure out where it came from. wink
