I have to share my dream I had last night with you all. While it is not unusual for me to dream of being at the grandstands or around the property watching races or being involved in some things, it is unusual in the way I dreamed of it last night. Normally about once every two weeks I will dream of the fairgrounds speedway, but this one was different.

I was on the fairgrounds property, around the area where the old airplanes used to be. By the TnT building. It was night time, late. Summertime because it was calm and warm and I could hear crickets and just a general 1AM feeling of being out doors in the summer. Very comfortable and relaxed, very quiet, no cars, no people. Just the ambient lights from light poles. I remember thinking, "hey, while I am here I am gonna go over and just stand in the place where the old track was and just reflect by myself and take in the tranquility of all the awesome memories I have of our place.

Let me go back for just a sec. Since they have torn it down I have not had a dream where the place did not exist. All my dreams have had a sort of "old days" feel to them. All happy times and good memories. Probably due to Brians videos and pics......my God those are awesome.

Anyway, I walk by the ampitheater, which is where we used to park. I walk through the open field there kinda looking down, minding my own business, when I look up, and through the trees I can see it. There she is! The grandstand is there! I run through the rest of the trees and come out into the opening to finally see her with unobstructed beauty. She was painted in the old red and blue checkered finish I remember from when I was a kid. Her paint was fresh, the black tinted window office area towards the north end looked new. The fence at the top was nice and the flower beds out by land rush street where all the cars would line up after the races were in bloom. She looked good. She looked healthy. She looked happy.

I just stood amazed and took it in. No one else around, it was so peaceful. After about 30 seconds I started to think "how is this happening, they tore it down?" At that same time, she started to fade. I could see across May avenue. I could see the Coca Cola plant. I yelled "NO! Come back!" At the same time, I tried to force myself to think that it wasn't gone and to bring that image back once again, and it did, but lighter and fainter. I wanted to bring it back but I couldn't, it just slowly kept getting fainter and fainter. I watched her disappear into the night sky and I knew it was all I was gonna get for that night. Like saying bye to an old friend I told her thank you and slowly walked backwards thanking her for all the great memories. At the end I turned my back and went about my business. It felt different. It felt colder. Almost chaotic.

For one quick glimpse she showed herself as if to say, "they tore me down, but I will always be here for you to remember." I saw her ghost, and was thankful that she showed herself to me. I don't think this is the last time. Her spirit lives on and the people that wanted her down can't take that away from us. So, I can't wait to go to sleep tonight because I can already hear Jack Claxtons voice and smell the corndogs and feel those old blue wooden bleachers under my rear. Because, honestly, I have never even left.

Good story and dream. I relive that Fairgrounds Speedway historic past almost daily myself, both "live and awake" and once in a dream myself. Headed all the way out there from MWC until I realized when I got there she was gone.

My mouth still drops to this day when I think about how long that grandstand and track stood and then, without notice, it was gone with the snap of a finger.

Again, thank you for sharing...

I do have the same dream .

If this film I have works out like it should, glue your socks to your legs, they'll get knocked off if you don't....................... A very special Lady has come forward to offer her film for us to see. Only a handful of living people have ever seen it. I'm fairly sure you could count on one hand the number of people who have, and still have a couple of fingers left over.

Sending the film in Monday. It may get expensive, but I think I can handle it. It just might lead to more.

Keep breathing and keep getting up, you ain't seen it all yet.

I dream about it almost weekly. Most are good happy memories, some I find out that there is one last race and my car isn't ready. I race home to get it ready and sometimes I make it back in time, sometimes I don't. Even if I don't make it in the dream I wake up happy because I got to be there again. I got to feel the magic that encompassed my favorite place. Thanks for the story Jeff.

Very cool, Dude! Kinda sad at the same time, but so true - nobody can take away all the great memories we have of many, many, many good times at the ole' State Fair Speedway! I still look over there every time I go by the Fairgrounds and then realize - she's not there! UGH!!

Thanks for sharing and reminding us of the Grand old structure! Dream On, Brother!

I've had some where both tracks are running, but no grandstands, some where part of the grandstands are there and I've had a few where we have our car at the track, but I don't have my uniform or something is missing or not working with the car?

sounds like I am not the only one. Brian, if your film project gets expensive you let me know. It is your dedication and love for our place that these dreams come true. I mean really, 1988 season videos? Come on man, it is like a dream come true.

BTW I need to get a hold of you for a couple pics. My email is [email protected].

Still have red bricks, dirt from the front stretch, blue bleacher pieces, and cinder block pieces that Uncle A and Wendy Chapa and friends collected and cut up, for the taken. Call me at Mr. Pickup 236-3215. And number plates from the lower reserved sections, Sure miss you Unc A and Wendy! Stop by anytime for a story exchange. Jeff

Hey Stew, I think it is very interesting that your dreams sometimes don't involve the fans or grandstands. I have the same kinda dreams, usually where something odd keeps happening. Like not finding your drivers suit or not having the simple things go right. Lets meet at the next Holleys BBQ. I would get a kick out of meeting and just hanging out with a lot of you guys. Except for Brandon because he would prolly let out a big nasty one in my face and laugh about it. JK.

Call me Unc A. We had some good conversations. 429-0169.

Sounds good, man! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one that's had these dreams. There have been some where I'm going through the grandstands to find a place to sit and once I do there's a support beam right in front of my seat, go figure? Anyway, I might need some more of that dirt because I've been using it in the display cases for model car builds. Yes, we'll hook up at Holley's next time!

If I had a dream of being at the speedway---most likely I would be in my underwear wishing no one noticed!

Juts as the hottest supers/modifieds came in, I'd have to go take care of something for a minute--which would turn into a long ordeal , just enough for the races to be over, just as I'm coming back into the place.

Jeff, thank you for the kind words. You know I could have never pulled off the souvenir's from the Fair Grounds Speedway (State Fair Speedway) without the help of you and your Dad (Jerry Stevens), Mr. Pickup parts and accessories, and Wendy Chapa.

I did recruit a team to help in recovering items, and I worked with both the City of OKC and the State Fair Board to even make any of this possible. I am certainly not looking for props or amens, I only felt it was my, or someones duty to retrieve as many items as possible to hand out to the many that spent the majority of their lives at the Historic facility.

And yes I still have thoughts and Dreams about the Ol Girl. Kinda hard not to since she has been my Friday night date Since 1967!

I just read this thread & I still have the dream I had like when I was a kid or teenager walking up the STEEP ramps under the grandstand & hearing the engines roar , then walking out the tunnel to see the cars packing the track. Then I wake up.

Back in the summer I had one that was around 4th of July. Watching the fireworks, looking toward downtown and seeing those fireworks downtown with family memebers that aren't here with us any more.

God, I realy really miss those great summer Friday nights .
