A very wise person once told me (Ok, I read it somewhere, can't remember where, but it made sense to me) to "fill your library before you fill your garage." So I would like to add to my library. What are good books relating to sprint cars and sprint car racing for someone looking to get a sprint car and learn?

Look at the HOF web site and check out the books they have. Anything written by Bob Mays is a sure enjoyment in the history of midwest sprint car racing.

Are you looking for technical books?

Stevie Smith Autosports, www.ssapubl.com, produces a book called Sprint Car Chassis Technology. To date, this is the only sprint car setup book that I am aware of. You can also find this book on E-Bay or at most well known speed shops, such as BR Motorsports or Speedway Motors.

The book is a good overview, especially for a beginner. Some of the setup advice is "dated", such as the torsion bar and shock suggestions, but the basics, such as rear end alignment, blocking, etc., still apply to present day racing.

Unfortunately, sprint cars are not only a challenge to drive, but there isn't a lot of free knowledge out there. There are plenty of people, like myself, who are willing to make suggestions, but at the end of the day, most of us are still learning ourselves. It's tough!

If you decide to get involved and ultimately purchase a car, I would find an established team (preferrably one that has a proven track record) and ask them to help you square up your car, verify that your torsion bar stops aren't going to fall off, and then establish a baseline setup. If you can get them to accompany you to a practice night, that's even better!

Good luck!

Find a copy of "Stand on the Gas" by Joe Scalzo. It was published in the early '70s if I recall correctly.
