they should take the 5 million he would have gotten had he won the race and put it in a trust fund for his wife and kids

I had the pleasure of meeting Dan at the Iowa Speedway in 2009. What a terrific guy. He was so willing to spend time with us fans. I'm glad I had a picture taken with him. Every time I see it I remember his infectious smile and great spirit. Rest in peace, Dan.

WOW. My heart goes out to the family. I have seen hundreds of sprint car crashes in my day but that was the worst auto racing crash I have ever seen.

A true gentlemen was lost today. My stomach was in knots as soon as I seen the tarp over the car. RIP Dan Wheldon.

my thought instantly was when he kissed the bricks with i think his two year old while his wife was holding the baby . rest in peace and god bless your family.
We need more sprint car racing at our home track.

Got to meet Dan and interview him for radio in 2007. I was one of the last to talk to him that day and after doing 45 other interviews for the national media, he took just as much time with me as he did with ESPN. He immediately gained my respect not only as a driver but as a person as well. Marty Reid on ABC said it best, it is the toughest thing to do for any person covering racing is to announce the death of a driver.

This is not the news that I wanted to come home to. Our loss is insignficant to the loss his wife and kids have faced today and this is not to say that anyone here underestimates this. Dave Despain said it so well in closing tonight's episode of Windtunnel. When this stuff happens my mind immediately goes to those closest to the people who do this thing we love so much. All of our thoughts need to be channeled in that direction right now. Such a sad day.

I am a 41 year old man and I can count the times I have cried in my adult life on one hand including today. Horrifying. I am saddened beyond belief.

Bud has been a racefan for 75 years and this day was as tough as they come ! In a 15 car crash it was clear that the outcome could have been so much worse, yet Dan Weldon's death has laid us all low as we contemplate what happens now for his close family and friends. Those who had met this man can testify that he was not only a gentleman but one who raised our sport by his participation. We now go on without him and can only hope that some good will come out of this huge hole that has been placed on our beloved sport. We will miss this man.

Terribly sad to hear. By all accounts he was a great guy. It breaks my heart to think of his kids.
