"Topless" Thunderfest Late Model Shootout Coming to Thunderbird Speedway!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Midwest City, Oklahoma – August 30, 2011 - Mark your calendars now for one of the biggest super late model shows to hit the state of Oklahoma in several years as the historic half mile oval of Thunderbird Speedway in Muskogee, Oklahoma plays hosts to the 1st annual Thunderfest Late Model Shootout from Thursday-Saturday night, September 22-24, 2011. Both nights will be two different programs with an added twist. The late model gladiators will be running "topless," no roofs on these high-powered full-bodied stock cars.

The "Thunderfest Late Model Shootout" will feature three of the premiere sanctioning bodies in the Heartland, including the Missouri based Comp Cams Super Dirt Late Models, MARS DIRTcar and National Championship Racing Association DIRTcar late model series.

Action will get underway on Thursday night, September 22, with an open practice session from 6:00 PM until 10:00 PM.

Then on Friday night the three sanctioning bodies take too the track for a complete program of heats, last chance features and feature finale with the winner taking home $2500.

Saturday night's program will again consist of heat races, last chance features and the finale which will pay $3000.

Any driver who can win both Friday and Saturday nights feature finales will take home a $500 bonus making it possible for one lucky driver to take home $6000.

If Friday night's winner does not qualify for Saturday night's championship event through the night's preliminaries, he will earn a guaranteed starting position for the feature.

Also there will be provisional's starting positions for drivers entered on Friday night. More information will be announced soon as well further details of this huge late model fest.

The Kansas based NCRA is the longest running sanctioning body out of the three that will be competing with 23 years of sanctioning late model racing. The tours last appearance at the Muskogee County Fairgrounds was back in 1998 when Al Purkey of Coffeyville, Kansas picked up the victory.

This will be the 12th consecutive season for the Missouri based MARS and their last appearance here was back in April of this year when Jesse Stovall of Galena, Missouri taking top honors.

The youngest of the series, the Arkansas based CCSDS, is in the middle of its fifth consecutive season with their last appearance coming back on May 6 when Billy Moyer, Jr. of Batesville, Arkansas took home the feature win.

More race information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.

Pit passes for both Friday and Saturday night will be $30 with grandstand general admission $15 for both nights of racing.

I've never understood the point of topless late models. Removing wings from sprinters, I get, but this one eludes me. Can someone explain?

LOL ask Ray Cook when he landed on his lid a couple weeks ago at the topless 100 and does anyone know the start time?

Kenny, not sure either. I lik'in it to topless modifieds. There are alot of folks who love stuff like that. Me, it is late models on a half mile track with some top names that should be there.

Start times are 8:00 PM both nights with $10 general admission.

Unlike sprinters, it seems a little gimmicky unless those lids cause a lot more drag than I would have guessed.

I have one for ya, winged late models. NO JOKE! I saw a winged late model show in I believe 1980, or 81' at Hutch Raceway Park. You wanna talk about odd.
