I'm not trying to start a fight and I know it's an age-old debate, but everytime I watch wingless 410's run on a dirt oval, I wonder why we need any other brand of racing. Just an opinion, and one that took some guts to post the week of the Knoxville Nationals. There's no such thing as bad sprint car racing, and I often support winged racing. Just think the wingless is far more entertaining.

I drive 1000 miles every July to see Indiana Sprintweek. I wish they would come to Texas.

Mossman, as I emailed ya. Looks like I will be seeing you tomorrow. The video tonight got me that itch so I can't miss it tomorrow night.

I am sure it was just as awesome in person as it was watching it on Al Gore's internet.

I enjoy all racing. Sprint cars on dirt are by far my favorite. I really enjoyed the Sunday night race at Knoxville. Watching those guys back 'em into turn one made the hair stand up on the back of my neck. That doesn't happen a lot anymore.

I think 305's should run wingless it would make for better racing! I also think it would help drivers with throttle control and make the transition To the big hammers a little easier . This is what I think but seeing how I'm a fan Not a driver I could be way off
It's not if! It's when and how bad

How come when a track has non wing race they don't pack the stands and when there is a winged sprint car race the stands are packed, and I love sprint car racing and a lot of us are upset because Chico is running non wing on Thursday for the Gold Cup and cut the winged sprints to a 2 day show, This year in Las Vegas they cut the non wing race and made it a 2 day show for the Outlaws race, I still like the non wing but I would never fly down from Alaska just to see a non wing race, could be because I grew up in Chico and Thats what I am used to, But if I ever see a non wing taking the turn at full throttle then I might be impressed, just my opinion though.

Non wing cars are fine, but I prefer to watch the winged cars myself.Funny how you will see non wing fans cut winged cars down but you never hear the opposite.

Dirty, I don't think anyone was being critical of winged racing. I go to a lot of winged races and enjoy them. And to the point someone else made, there is no question that winged racing draws bigger crowds. My point in starting the thread was simply to wonder why that's true. Personally, I don't see how you could go watch the two and choose winged over non-winged. It baffles me that non-winged racing doesn't play to full grandstands.

To touch on a few comments here...

kmossman: You won't get an argument here... For the raw entertainment value, for me, backing in a sprintcar with mud flying off, yanking the front end off the ground and seeing just how far a driver is willing to push it....Man, it just doesn't get any better!

Wpafan: Isn't "throttle control" and "winged racing" an oxymoron? Okay, okay, on the dryslick tracks they use throttle control, but it seems that they use just as much brake pedal to try to control wheel spin.

dirtybeer: Granted, on many threads, you see people take a militant stance for one or the other, but not this one. And yes, in the 14 or 15 years I've been a memeber of this forum, I have seen the cutdowns go both ways.

As far as winged races getting more people in the stands? A wise man on the West coast once told me...

"There are more roaches in New York City and humans, but that doesn't make them better..."

I enjoy a good winged race as much as the next person, but I've said it many times...To have a good winged race with a lot of passing, the track needs to slick off, that's why most of the heat races are a locked down single file afair. But for a good non wing race, you want the track heavy if you want to see passing. So, dust? Or no dust? I know which one I want...

Give me nonwing anyday!

I think I can answer the question. In no way am I talking down non wing racing, but when a fan that watches a lot of wing racing watches non wing racing, they just plain look slow. Not saying the races aren't good or anything bad about them, just giving what I believe to be an honest explanation.I believe another reason is purely cosmetic,to most fans a winged sprint just plain looks badass, they just love to watch them go around the track.Bash away,I'm just trying to be honest.

I would bet that if you did a survey of all the pro-winged fans vs the pro-non-winged fans you would find that the majority of the non-winged fans started attending races before wings came along, and the winged fans started after. Same reason would probably apply to why non-winged fans think their preference of cars looked "badass" compared to the winged.

I grew up watching both, and still do.The old non wing cars were a thing of beauty, the newer non wing cars aren't much to look at in my opinion.

Just the opposite in Indiana. Wing vs. non wing - very localized.

Winged popularity can be much attributed to TV coverage. WoO is good at it, USAC ain't.

And all sprint cars look like a sled after attending an NHRA, Indy or F1 event. No bashing, but everything is relative...

No bashing here just commenting. On the concept of speed of non-wing vs wing. It would seem to be relative and particularly important to understand the handling differences of the two types. Watch the wing cars at K'ville, set the car into the corner and hammer the throttle. Non-wing gotta play with that throttle. As someone said on another post many of today's fans are only familiar with wing racing due to marketing forces. as to the cosmetics this would seem to be a matter of taste and again the much more aggressive and broader marketing of winged racing. I am old enough to remember when the K'ville Nat's. were non-wing. The switch to winged racing had much more to do with safety and insurance rather than quality of one type of racing over the other.

Sprint cars are bad ass either way. Drivers that can win in both skills are the best racers in my eyes.
