Knoxville stopped regular non-wing racing when Gary Scott was killed on May 1, 1982.

I believe USAC and midget shows were about the only non-wing shows since.

Great stuff! Keep up the good work!

Interesting to note the photogs practically on the track, and the fuel spill in the one crash. We have made a LOT of safety progress. (catch fence looks a little light, too!)

I believe the best wingless race was when SCRA came to Knoxville

Great stuff!!!! As someone that didn't grow up in Knoxville I've been very interested in the history and if anyone has old movies of the races. BTW does anyone know who the flagman and track announcers were that year?

Great video! Thanks a lot.

That was back when cars could be drastically different from each other and the races could be as exciting as they could possibly get. I'm a bit younger than that era, but I miss the days where you could see drivers start on the back row and win it... and it didn't have to be a dry slick track to do it (Brad Doty in 87? and Wolfgang in the '88 Nationals come to mind). Cars were basically carved out of steel and a lot more durable too- which made them weigh twice as much as they do now!

Makes you really respect the guys that were (and still are) out there doing it.

Ascot and Manzy had alway's ran non wing's almost exclusively, and AZ and Southern Cali still are non wing county. In fact here in AZ we have the only non wing ASCS regional series....period!

You could throw N.M in there too. The NMMRA is one of the oldest non winged groupes with 50+ years I believe, and still going! http://www.nmmra.com/schedule.php

Gotta love that shot of "Lil' Shu" at the beginning.

CRA never ran with wings, nor the SCRA. NARC was non wing until the early eighties. I beleive that it was the deat of Gary Patterson that got them to strap the wings on.

The announcer in the video was the late Jack Miller.

Not positive on the flagman, 1979 was the year Duane Stoneking lost his life in a crash earlier that season (July?) that took down the flagstand, seriously injurying the then flagman, former racer Gary Johnson.

I think the flagman that took over was Gail Miller, but not positive. From watching this clip, it appears that the "helper" on the flagstand might have been
P. Ray Grimes.

Brings back alot of memories.

Once I get with Brian26 (as I am still internet/technical stupid after all these years) and give him the tape you will be able to watch the "Sunday night" 1982 non-wing Knoxville Nationals as well. The video is not professionally produced but enough to where you know what is going on. And yes the finale crash is caught on tape from the grandstands.
