Big J Report Presented by DeBerg Concrete
21 410s
Welcome Mat The McCarl's make it back north after Terry (in the Vermeer 55 again) won the night before at Knoxville for his 50th career 410 win there and A-Mac after a career best third place finish. Logan Forler made the 12+ hour trip overnight from the ASCS National race at Little Rock the night before to throw the 410 in at the track he has grown to love.
MIA The Dud lost his map, again. Casey Mack is also missing for the first time all year.
VIP With Bosma24 hitting up Vegas and DeBerg pouring concrete, the VIP (with Little J in tow) heads down a dozen or so rows to join the BFD gang for some blue tasties (lingo for God's Beer), commentary, and updates on the NBA Finals game. The Champ makes the trip from the Lakes with his actual dad as well!
Time Trials – 1 lap on the clock The results show Mark Dobmeier was the fastest with a lap of 11.172 around the 1/3 mile track. Terry McCarl second quick at 11.222, Scott Winters third at 11.287, Gregg Bakker fourth with a 11.320 lap, and Chad Meyer fifth fast at 11.359.
Its always nice to rely on the website for results when yours truly needs a quick snooze after dinner following a 21 hour slaving-away-thon at work within a 29 hour period.
Also, the I-Team close to the Report tells us that it took a good 10-15 minutes in order to get the laser fixed to accurately time the 410s. You may want to check on that baby this week while timing Bakker in the grader!
3 Heat Races – 8 Laps a piece. Invert of 18 overall, 6 in each heat, and top 4 getting time back for redraw.
Heat 1 Start: 5 12 17A 2L 11x 13 9M Heat 1 Finish: 12 2L 13 17A/ 11x 5 9M Notes: Stacked heat race with a bunch of drivers fighting for the top four spots. Jeffrey took off with the lead and went onto win the heat as Forler gradually tried to run him down. A-Mac and Bakker fought for that fourth spot early swapping sliders. Dobmeier went around both to move into third on the last lap as A-Mac hung on ahead of Bakker for the important fourth position.
Heat 2 Start: 97 212 99J 33 1w 55 36x Heat 2 Finish: 55 1w 99J 97/ 36x 33 (DNF) 212 (DNS) Notes: Brink pulled in right before the start moving the outside row up a row. A false start was called on the initial start, but Wolfgang still went up in smoke with a blown engine. That put T-Mac on the outside pole for the next restart and an eight lap hot lap session was in line next. Meyer moved up to second and quickly erased a large lead from T-Mac. McCarl hung on the last few laps after pressure from Meyer's #1w.
Heat 3 Start: 4x 101 1HX 14 4 23w 3 Heat 3 Finish: 101 14 4 23w/ 4x 3 1HX Notes: "Mr. Cool" McGillivray took off with the lead on lap one until Winters spun out in turns one and two. Winters would quickly get up to fourth on the restart and battled Hansen for a third position with the latter hanging on for it. Good battle up front between the 101 and Rosenboom with Chucky hanging on for a popular heat win.
Heat Grade: B+, Good action especially in the first heat race. Beer Grading activities start following the heats for the first time all year. The heats finished at 8:50, but Bakker makes the right call in grading the cushion.

Notes: This baby lived up to the long wait and expectation of a perrrty draw of an eight. Rosenboom took the initial lead after pinching A-Mac to the bottom, but that was short lived as Forler spun to the inside apron of turn two. The next start saw A-Mac grab the lead and quickly establish himself as the guy to beat. T-Mac quickly moved up into the second position a lap later utilizing the top of turn two past Rosenboom.
Meanwhile back in the pack, business was definitely starting to pick up. Winters moved up into the fourth position past Meyer on lap five with Dobmeier doing the same to Meyer for fifth a lap later. Both were utilizing the cushion and both coming to the front in a hurry. Winters barely missed a slider on Rosenboom for third and that allowed Dobs to get by him for fourth on lap seven. A-Mac continued to lead his father as he hit traffic. Dobmeier got by Rosenboom for third on lap nine and Winters was following him until Rosenboom pinched Winters into the frontstretch wall on lap eleven. The yellow quickly came out, but Winters never stalled the motor on the T&K Transport/Nam Design Schnee.
The restart with 15 to go had A-Mac leading father T-Mac, Dobmeier, Winters back in line where he crossed the stripe on the previous lap in fourth, Rosenboom, and Meyer. Dobmeier quickly threw a slider on T-Mac into turn one on the restart for second and quickly set his eyes on the 18-year old, recent high school grad. The lead stayed the same size as the caught the back end of traffic again. Bakker had charged up fifth and into fourth by Winters. The 23w got back by Bakker off of turn four with a slider. Bakker repaid the favor with his own into turn one with seven to go. Winters cut under it and held onto fourth rolling down the backstretch. Great racing going on between the two.
As the hellacious racing was going on behind him, A-Mac's lead actually grew as he professionally split a couple of lappers that held Dobmeier up for a bit. Dobmeier dived into the backstretch pits then with five to go when the rear-end let go. An insurmountable lead for A-Mac was the result as he drilled the cushion around the track. Behind him, Terry and Winters battled each other cleanly in traffic for the second spot with T-Mac barely hanging on ahead of Winters. A-Mac ended up beating his dad and everyone else by half a lap! It was his first career 410 win at the bullring, second 410 win of his career, and paid $2,500 to the T-Mac Motorsports, Inc. team. He also officially led all 25 laps and was pumped as hell in victory lane with Terry, Lori, Carson, and the rest of the crew.
Extras *A-Mac gets a third at Knoxville the night before and then goes out and dominates for his first Huset's win. The kid has improved so much over the last two years and it was gratifying to see him get the win ahead of pops. Terry has taught him so well over the years and it is going to pay off as the future is very bright for Austin in sprint car racing. The only problem I had was Austin forgetting the sponsors! Terry would have never forgot that! We can let it slide since it was your first win though.
*How 'bout that McCarl sweep over two nights and two other podium finishes to throw on top of that! T-Mac takes it to the Dud at Knoxville on his Induction Night and then Austin follows it up by stomping them at Huset's. And all of this comes with Bosma24 out in Vegas (comin' home broke!) for a tune-up for Knoxville next week. I would love to be his agent this week as he's fielding calls from T-Mac Motorsports to stay away again this week with the Outlaws rolling into Knoxville!
*Sadly, I will not be able to make it down to Knoxville next week as my best friend is having his bachelor party this weekend and wedding the following weekend (that means no Grand Forks either). So someone will have to carry on Savage's tradition down in the Ville next week since I cannot accommodate my usual position as "Savage In Training."
*I did get to the track in time to hear Hot Rod give The Report the best shout out of all time. The BFD gang loved it as well. I think you had me giggling with joy with attaching DeBerg Concrete to it as well! Thanks again to Mr. DeBerg for sponsoring this spot for the year in order for you to read this in-depth report…
*.. In saying that, there is still room for associate sponsorship for the rest of 2011 on the Big J Report! If you would like your business' name attached to this much-read and much-loved report, drop me an email!
*I will gladly take an 8 or 10 invert every night if it results in the racing that occurred last night. Gregg Bakker and Dave Lunstra have put in a lot of time, effort, and equipment to save the racing surface and they cannot be thanked enough so far to start the year!
*Big crowd, great car counts, and great racing in the 360 and 410 features. Sign me up for that every week. The only gripe I have is the late start time and resulting late night on a work night. School may be out, but the show really does need to start at 7pm sharp with the five classes in the infield and no excuses. Its time to start implementing a three-caution rule for each feature with fenders. After the third caution, all cars must pull in. Its simple, and non-negotiable.
*Whoever is in charge in calling the yellows in the fender classes must be getting paid by the yellow, whether that be the flagman or whoever up top. If it is the flagman it is time to bring back Clark at whatever he wants to be paid because it is getting miserable watching the multiple spinouts and immediate waving of yellows.
*Big ups to the Forler team for coming from Little Rock overnight to do some 410 racing. It was disappointing to see him spin out on the first lap with a good starting spot, but he charged back through the field for a good finish. He is another one of those young gassers that everyone needs to keep their eye on in the future.
*That'll wrap it up for this week. We'll be back next Sunday with another report from Huset's. I hope everyone has a good time in Knoxville, and that it stays dry. But that might be a long reach since the lanky rain cloud known as the "DudeFan" is heading that way…
