Now that the fairgrounds track has been closed for going into it's second year, I would have thought that someone would be building a track in a nearby town. Has sprint car racing just died out in the OKC area?

It's sad but true, in my opinion, that racing days in the OKC metro are gone for the near future. Dirt track racing is redneck, cheap intertainment that doesn't fit in with what mayor Cornnuts has envisioned for the city. Look at what is being supported- the Thunder, horse facilities, and MAPs-Bricktown. All of which equate to one thing, money. As far as fans and racers are concerned, each road trip I make to Devil's Bowl, I-30, etc. I am amazed at the folks in the crowd from OKC and the surrounding area. There are usually a good number of OKC area drivers represented at ASCS events as well, so I can say that there is not a lack of interest, only a lack of a pocketbook for backing! I may be looking at the situation all wrong, but it seems like a logical, though disheartening, explanation.

Don't kid yourself about Devils Bowl though. They still draw a good crowd at ASCS shows, but weekly racing there is pretty much dead. There are no sprints any more. Car counts are dwindling in the other classes too. As far as Oklahoma City, I would think someone would eventually build another track somewhere in that area. I'm sure there are plenty of racers and fans in the area, and unlike the Dallas area there isn't eight other tracks in the area to compete with it.

Don't count on seeing a track built around OKC area anytime soon.
