Billy boat needs at the very least a shout out. This is Indy week and one of ours did sit on the pole in 98 with a 223.547 with a normally aspirated engine and he was the fastest ever around Ascot in 1990 17.958 and he put that famous # 98 back on the track at Indy.

•Scored four top-10 finishes.
•Qualified 23rd for Indianapolis 500, finished 18th. Was slowest qualifier in the field, becoming only the fourth driver to be the slowest qualifier for two consecutive years.
•Surpassed $4 million in career IndyCar Series earnings.

2001
• Finished a career-best fourth in the Indy Racing League point standings driving for CURB-Agajanian Motorsports.
• Scored four top-five finishes, including a second place at Nashville.
• Best qualifying effort of the year was fourth, at Nashville and the fall race at Texas Motor Speedway.
• Qualified 32nd for Indianapolis 500, finished ninth. Spent the final 48 minutes of Bump Day anxiously waiting on the bubble as the slowest qualifier, but survived 12 unsuccessful qualifying attempts by eight drivers.
• Running at the end of all but one Indy Racing event in 2001.
• Announced in November that he will compete in the full 2002 season with a new team for which he is co-owner, CURB/Agajanian/Boat Indy Racing.

2000
• Earned Indy Racing Northern Light Series career-best points finish of tenth.
• Drove eight races with Team Pelfrey, drove Indianapolis 500 for A.J. Foyt Racing. Finished 15th in Indianapolis 500 after starting 33rd. Started practice and qualifying with Team Pelfrey. Crashed in qualifying and made dramatic last-minute qualifying run with third A.J. Foyt entry.
• Won MCI WorldCom Long Distance Award at Indianapolis 500 and Excite 500 at Texas Motor Speedway for improving most number of positions during race.
• Completed 1,638 laps, fourth-best total of season.
• Surpassed $3 million in career Indy Racing League earnings.

1999
• Won pole at Kobalt Mechanics Tools 500 presented by MCI WorldCom at Atlanta in A.J. Foyt Racing entry for eighth career pole, tying Tony Stewart for Indy Racing record.
• Finished third at Indianapolis 500, one of four cars on lead lap.
• Finished career-best 12th in season point standings.
• Led 29 laps at MCI WorldCom 200 at Phoenix before finishing fourth at hometown track.
• Surpassed $2 million in career Indy Racing League earnings. Fourth on season earnings list with $846,000.

1998
• Earned first career Pep Boys Indy Racing League victory at True Value 500 in Fort Worth, Texas, beating Greg Ray to the finish line by .928 of a second.
• Won six PPG Poles, including the Indianapolis 500, a league record for most poles in one season.
• Won PPG Pole Master Award and $10,000 bonus for winning the most poles during the season.
• Won PPG Pole at Indianapolis 500 at 223.547 mph, an event record for a normally aspirated car. Led first 12 laps of Indianapolis 500.
• Won PPG Pole at last five races of season, a league record for consecutive poles.
• One of four league drivers to earn $1 million during 1998 season. Others were Eddie Cheever Jr., Kenny Brack and Tony Stewart.
• Missed races at Dover, Del., and Charlotte, N.C., after suffering broken left leg and broken pelvis in accident during New England 200 at Loudon, N.H. Third in point standings before injury.

1997
• Made Indy Racing League (IRL) debut at the Indianapolis 500 with the Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing team.
• Qualified for Indianapolis 500 in A.J. Foyt-owned entry at 215.544. Started 22nd took lead from Tony Stewart on Lap 51 and finished seventh as second highest-placing rookie.
• Took over the A.J. Foyt No. 1 car for the injured Scott Sharp at Texas. Led twice for 10 laps, finished second.
• Drove for injured John Paul at Pikes Peak in PDM Racing car.
• Returned to Foyt's car, replacing injured Sharp, at Charlotte, finished second. Finished season with Foyt.
• Captured First IRL Pole at 1997 Las Vegas Race.
• Won eight USAC Midget features, including two victories at the 16th Street Speedway, and three National events.
Won the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" at Ventura Raceway in Calif. becoming the first person to win that event three consecutive times.
• Won four of six USAC national midget starts. Won three of 12 USAC Western States midget starts.

1996
• Passed Indianapolis 500 Rookie Orientation Program in backup Pagan Racing entry, then passed driver's test two days later. Qualified for Indy 500 with four-lap average of 221.824 mph.
• Practiced A.J. Foyt entry after qualifying for Indianapolis 500 as backstop if he got bumped, crashed in south short chute, admitted for observation at Methodist Hospital. Bumped 18 minutes after his accident by Joe Gosek.
• Finished second in the USAC Western States Midget Championship, winning 13 of 31 feature events.
Won the opening night race of the Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) at Manzanita Speedway and the following day won the "Copper World Classic" midget race at Phoenix International Raceway.
• Won the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" at Perris Auto Speedway in California.

1995
Broke all USAC records for consecutive single-series feature wins with 11 straight (breaking the record of 10 previously held by A.J. Foyt) Western States midget victories (May 20 at Madera through Sept. 16 at Ventura) en route to series championship, winding up season with 18 wins in 27 feature starts.
•Win streak ended Sept. 23 at Madera when he finished second to Davey Hamilton.
• USAC Western States Midget Champion, winning 18 of 27 feature races, which tied an all-time USAC single-season, single-series record (set by Sleepy Tripp in 1988).
• Had best finish of third at Sacramento in four USAC Silver Crown races.
• Won the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" at Bakersfield Speedway.
• Won the "Belleville Nationals" at the Belleville High Banks track in Kansas, MO.
• Named to the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) All Star Team, as one of two winningest drivers in 1995 USAC competition.

1994
• Won two features en route to second in USAC Western States points behind Johnny Cofer.

1993
• Won three USAC Western States features in four starts.
• Scored his first USAC victory on May 1 in the 30-lap midget event at Kings Speedway in Hanford, California.

1992
• Started three USAC Western States Midget Championship races with team owner John Lawson, scoring a best finish of second place at Kings Speedway in Hanford, California.

1991
• Finished third in the California Racing Association (CRA) point standings with three main event wins and 21 top-five finishes.
• Known as the "King of Qualifying" in CRA competition due to the fact he earned 14 of the fastest qualifying times and won 11 heat races.

1990
• First full season with the CRA with Bromme Racing, won three features, 16 top-ten finishes, and a season-high 11 fastest times on his way to sixth place in the final point standings.
• Set the all-time fastest lap (17.958 seconds) at Ascot Park in Gardena, California
.

1989
• Made USAC midget debut.
• Racing in the Arizona Sprint Car Championship scored six feature wins, 15 top-five finishes, and set eight fastest times.

1988
• Won six main events in the California Racing Association and had nine top-three finishes by August when he was involved in an accident at Ascot Park which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
• Although he missed the last three months of the racing season, he still finished fifth in the final point standings.

1987
• Won the Arizona Sprint Car Championship, winning six of 22 races, scoring 11 second-place finishes, and never finishing lower than fourth place.

1986
• Competed in nine of ten Indy Lights events earning sixth in the championship with three top-five finishes, including a third place at Phoenix International Raceway.
1985
• Raced a Formula Ford in local club races in Phoenix and earned a second-place finish in the 1985 Eloy Grand Prix.

1983
• Won his first two winged sprint car main events (Casa Grande and Manzanita).
• Was one of the youngest drivers to win a sprint car main event at Manzanita Speedway in Arizona.
• Earned the Arizona Sprint Car Association's "Most Improved Driver."

1982
• Arizona Sprint Car Association's "Rookie of the Year."

I remember Foyt saying that he had a ride at Indy for life after sitting on the pole in '98.

Triva 1985 Eloy Grand Prix. Ever thought I would see this on a Sprint Car Forum.I sold the Grand Prix Teeshirts for this event. Agro Center and HASA would insure the whole town for this event.Billy's Dad Bill Boat won the Western World with Ron Shuman.

I'm confused as usual, Kinser won in 85 and the grand prix (formula one) race came in 89 and we stayed away in droves. Only 16,000 they say, probably less. The cement walls around Manzy were aquired after that deal.
