I'm not familiar with quick change rear ends. I have one with 4.86 ring and pinion and have only powerglade trannys set up to run in low gear (have both 1.76 and 1.82)...my question is, how do I find out what gear sets to use to get right around an overall 6.86 or somewhere in that area? any help would be appricated.

Grease, you have the preferred ring and pinion gear 4:86. Smiley's or Bishops has charts to tell you what gear set you need to achieve the final drive you desire. Back in the day allot of WoO teams were running a 4:10 ring and pinion gear that work better on the big tracks 1/2 to 1 mile.

That was a whole different deal and gears. Since most all tracks (local) are 3/8 to 1/4 the ideal R&P is 4:86.

If you multiply your rear gear ratio and your trans ratio gives you your final.

1.82 trans x 3.23 rear = 5.87

or divide what final ratio you want by either the trans ratio or rear ratio

you want a final of 5.86 / your trans 1.82 = 3.219 rear gear or

final 5.86 / trans 1.76 = 3.329

if your trans in high gear is 1.00 then your final ratio will be the actual rear ratio

trans 1.00 x rear 5.86 = 5.86

hope this helps.

I found a chart in the Smileys catalog but don't understand it. i guess what I am asking is, can someone tell me what gear set number I will need to achieve a final gear of 6.86 running a powerglide in low (1.82), if I knew what gear set number would give me that ratio, I'm sure I could figure out the chart from there

If you multiply your rear gear ratio and your trans ratio gives you your final.

1.82 trans x 3.23 rear = 5.87

or divide what final ratio you want by either the trans ratio or rear ratio

you want a final of 5.86 / your trans 1.82 = 3.219 rear gear or

final 5.86 / trans 1.76 = 3.329

trans 1.00 x rear 5.86 = 5.86

hope this helps.

Yes, I understand how to come up with my overall ratios with the trans gear and rear gear, it's the chart that I can't figure out. I'm sure its probably elementary, I 'm just missing something here.

Try Set #4 for your 1.82 gear or Set # 13 for your 1.76 gear, be sure to place the SMALL gear on TOP and LARGE gear on BOTTOM. If my math is correct this should work.

buy a bert or brinn if you have a q/c surely they are allowed... you will be money ahead vs trying to get a powerglide to stay together.

If you decide to stay with powerglide in low As previously noted you will have to put the large gear on bottom which is not typical of a quickchange not sure if this is going to be good for the q/c

thanks rollout, I see how you came up with that by swaping the high and low gear....powerslide11 made a good point about it not being good on the rearend, myself, I don't know, just wondering if they are designed to work properly by doing that? I'm starting to think a bert might be my best bet even though I have three powerglides ready to go.

Ouick change rear ends are made to run either way with Big gear on top or bottom, never ran them in a race car with little gear on top, big gear on the bottom but there are thousands of street rods running coast to coast with quick change rearends running Big gears on bottom and Little gears on top. Good luck !!!!

Jon, if it was me I would sell those 3 glides and buy a bert, brinn or falcon..Falcon same length as your glide so same driveshaft and with the berts, brinns, falcons you dont need spare tranny's taking up room in your garage..

Yeah, I am gonna go ahead and break down and buy one. I made a deal with a guy on a Bert last night that supposedly has only two races on it....gonna go pick it up tomorrow....NOW I just need to come up with a drive flange and a stock Gm steel bell housing. I have the pedal assembly and shifter/linkages.

Anyone out there have a bell housing and drive flange?

might have a drive flange, and have a factory aluminum bell housing. What gear are you looking for now?

Are your powerglides direct drive or use with a torque converter? What do you want for them?

yes if you would dirt-mod12, check on that drive flange, I was hoping to find a steel bell housing, i got a guy who said he'd hook me up with an aluminum one. as far as the gears go now, I'm looking at set #'s 14 , 14A or 35. I might already have a hook up on those too, but let me know what you got, thanks

They are direct drives but I had planned on hanging on to them, still waiting on that new track to open (whenever and where ever that may be) hoping they will run factory stocks so I can get in where I fit in. I don't really have any business trying to run with the pro-stocks. with a budget like mine I don't really have any business racing period!
