Throwing my opinion out here and wondering if this bothers anybody else or if I am just plain anal. Does anybody get irritated when a winged sprint car has their number placed on the front (leading edge if you will) side of the top wing panels? I've always preferred the number be placed on the back half of the panel, towards the rear tires. To me, that way just seems easy to read and easier to find the number of the car when there are 20 plus cars on the track at one time. When the number is placed on the front half of the wing panel, I find it can be irritating for some reason (again, I may be suffering from some type of personal phobia or something on this subject). I think it just looks unbalanced or something, always have.
Craig Dollansky has always, or at least as long as I can remember, had his big number 7 on the front half of the wing panel. Some other guys I can think of that seem to prefer this are Greg Wilson, Dobmeier, the Parson's car (Casey's) and some of the IRA guys like Nietzel and Borland.
I think it's the graphics or something. A lot of times it seems to me that when the number is up front, it's hard to get a nice flowing paint scheme. I'm not saying these cars always look crappy, but I just like the number near the back of the panel I guess. Anybody want to chime in with their take on my number placement disorder?

Are you REALLY that bored, that you take issue with wing number placement? Seriously?
Here's the best advice you're going to get on this subject....
Go to non wing races from now on.

Yes, I am bored. I'm in Wisconsin, it's Janurary, it's below zero and we have snow up to our a-holes. Things are just not going my way I guess. HELP ME! The voices, stop the voices!

I actually prefer the number on the front of the wing--it gives me more of a "choice" as to where to look for the numbers. The numbers on the rear of the wing (to me) are too close to the numbers on the tail. If I happen to glance up and see something interesting I like to have as many choices to pick up the number as possible, especially if it's a local car that's more difficult for me to identify by color alone.

I think they'd get more downforce for a dry-slick track on the right rear if the number is on the back of the wing.... with the weight of the number closer to the right rear tire ... for a heavy track you'd want to loosen up the car a bit so in that case the number would work better on the front of the wing.....

Johnny - you do a great job identifying cars and action on the track already!
looking forward to the weather to clear for another race season...

I knew I was asking for it on this one. Actually, the root cause of my issues may indeed be this horrible beer I bought. It's called Beer 30 (yeah, like the time). This shit is bad and I knew it would be, but a 30-pack for a little more than $10 and I just couldn't pass it up. C'mon racing season, please start soon. Listening to Larry Mac and DW on Speed is not helping in any way either.

So, by using your logic, two digit numbers would make a bigger difference since they weigh more than single digit numbers, and "8's" would outweigh "1's"!

Yeah, but remember those heavier 8's have to be compensated for somewhere else with titanium nuts to keep the weight of the car as close to minimum as possible! That makes racing even more expensive.
Actually, what bugs me the most is when cars/drivers change paint schemes. Makes it that much harder to keep track of who's on the track until I get the new looks fixed in my brain. That's usually about August at the Nationals.
Friggin winter is getting the best of me. 60 inches of snow so far and already minus 1 degree here in suburban Minneapolis! Thank God I'm retired and don't have to go out (except to get my wife's oil changed, car filled up, Chinese food for dinner and a new supply of wine). I guess since she is still bringing home a paycheck, I shouldn't complain.

LMFAO. u guys r wild. lol. i guess i could have talked sh%% until it got down into the teens in houston. i think the cold is even getting to my brain to agree with this. however, everyone will always remember timmy's 83 at the front of his wing winning the 50th kville nationals. just sayin. granted, even being at the front, the 83 took up almost the whole front half of the side board! lol, but youre never gonna forget it!

Wow, I could really go off on this one. But most of you would not like the outcome. Why is it that so many of you have to get on this board and criticise.
Are you trying to make up for a Penis deficit, or is it simply a Fat disorder that only McDonald's golden arches can cure. I mean seriously, most on this forum cannot post a honest, or friendly response. All I am saying is if you want it that way, I will be more than happy to put you in your place.
Because from what I have seen at the WoO shows and other Top Notch events the Pits are full of a bunch of Fat smart asses that couldn't get a date with a girl if their life depended on it. Just saying.
Don't be so quick to criticise until you look in the mirror.

I put the numbers toward the front quite a bit on numerous cars. It makes the car appear lower in stature, as well as enhance whatever scheme youve got going. Sometimes it helps the sponsor placement by having the number in the front. Plus,, its just fun to change it up a bit, so they dont all look the same. Thats been the biggest challenge in designing a car to this day.

I like the number at the front as well, but even more than that I like the Australian style of using the entire right side-board for sponsorship and the number on the inside of the left side-board. The rulebook will not allow it here in the States, so to the front the number goes. Makes it look like it's going faster...

What if a car showed up with no number at all? But the scheme or theme of the car was so identifiable that you could immediately know who it was?
Numbers are overrated and outdated today with electronic timing and scoring. Could be a good time for sprint car drivers and teams to start branding themselves without using numbers.

To me, the placement of the numbers on the wing is not an issue. A bigger problem is when the number doesn't stand out. Some of the folks doing graphics try to get too artsy and everything is just unreadable at speed.
Are we having fun yet?
