Stewart Interviewed by Parramatta Police

Saturday 15th January, 2011

Tony Stewart has allegedly been involved in a off-track incident at Sydney Speedway

US NASCAR superstar Tony Stewart has allegedly been involved in a off-track incident at Sydney Speedway which has seen him interviewed by Parramatta police this morning.

Stewart was allegedly involved in a physical altercation with speedway co-owner and former driver Brett Morris after early-evening time trials.

It is believed that Stewart, who is racing for a team owned by Morris’ business partner and Australian speedway legend Garry Rush, had issues about track conditions after a Hot Lap session and made them known to Morris. A helmet and punches were rumored to be thrown and exchanged during the alleged altercation.

Stewart is regarded as one of the biggest names in world motorsport and has been competing for the second consecutive year in Australia during his NASCAR “off season”. He has used the trip Down Under to mix some dirt track racing with a well-deserved holiday from a regular US NASCAR season which sees him running around 43 race weekends during the year.

Staff at Parramatta Police Station confirmed to Speedcafe.com.au this morning at 12.49am (AEDST) that Stewart was being held for questioning, but indicated that nothing could be confirmed about the incident until later today – including whether Stewart had been officially charged or whether similar charges were being pursued by Stewart against Morris.

The final outcome of this situation could result in a raft of ramifications including Stewart’s scheduled departure from the country later today, legal requirements back in Australia if it is found he has questions to answer and the overall effect this will have on Australia-US speedway relationships.

Stewart, who turns 40 in May, owns his own NASCAR team and has been a full-time competitor in NASCAR Sprint Cup for 12 consecutive seasons from 1999.

In that time he has won more than $US88 million in prize money, won 39 races and 12 pole positions and has a worse season finishing position of 11th (2006).

Parramatta City Raceway, which has since become Sydney Raceway, was sold to Rush, Morris and business partners Rod Bowen and Dennis Loudoun in November 2009.

Speedcafe.com.au is waiting for a further update this morning and will advise readers when there is an outcome.
For the record, Stewart’s mate and fellow US dirt track staff Donny Schatz won last night’s meeting.

There was more action in the pits last night then on the race track at Sydney Speedway,

First there was the Tony Stewart / Brett Morris punch up after Morris was hit in the head with a helmet and has a suspected broken jaw, iam not sure what injuries Stewart has but he didnt get off to lightly, Stewart was arrested and taken to Parramatta police station and detained.

Then there was the Dolansky drama, he was involved in a first lap crash in the feature race, drove into the pits and changed a rear tyre and returned to the track, one of the other drivers involved in the same crash took offence when he was not allowed to change his damaged tyre and had words to Dolansky pit crew and then all hell broke lose in the pits between pit crews with three heavy weights from Dolansky crew beating up the other driver before his crew could step in and help him out, once again the police and track security were called out for the second time.

Now the big question is will Smoke make his Sunday flight departure or be detained to answer charges that have been filed at this stage.???????

I so hope the three crew members who demonstrated their manliness with the three on one attack are Australians. I would be very embarrassed as an American, to have two cowardly episodes by the (Ugly) Americans in one evening in Australia.

so much for double standards as they would not let drivers back out any other night even if no laps were lost stated that was the rule. As fars as Tony he had a legit b!tch as the track was in bad shape and then put drivers around that cannot keep the car straight making for a fustrating racer

I wonder if Nascar will try to fine Tony some money for this one. Heck, might as well take some points away too.

But why would a driver go confront a team/crew for letting the car back out, its the officials that own the double standards.

Why would NASCAR fine him for something that happend In Austraila and had nothing to to with NASCAR? His trip was not NASCAR affiliated.

Don't be too embarrassed. The Yanks have been coming down here forever and race hard with Aussies and Americans treating each other with great respect.Once in a while things get a bit heated but that happens with US drivers against each other and Aussies against each other as well.At the moment there is a bit of tension in Sydney speedway after the passing of Brian Healy (former promoter) and the new team taking over and doing things a bit differently.Drivers and supporters from the USA are always welcome in Oz as we always are in the States.Tony has been a great ambassador for your side of the Pacific during his recent trips Down Under.

"the overall effect this will have on Australia-US speedway relationships". IMHO, the Tony Stewart/Brett Morris deal won't have any effect on Aussie-US speedway relationships. A bit of an exaggeration. I sure hope Smoke didn't throw his helmet and break Morris' jaw. OVER TRACK CONDITIONS???? Yeah, he has a temper but. . . . Don't think we have the whole story yet.

Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.

Just to add a bit more info to the Dolansky pit crew drama, .... The three crew members were Australians and Craige and his car owner had no input into any of fighting that went on with his crew.

Ron, you were there last night (and even if you weren't you are always "plugged" in to the happenings). Can you please put an end to this drip-feed bullshit and tell everyone what exactly went down?
