Editors Note: I was thinking wings became mandatory after Gary Scott was killed at Knoxville. Gary was killed in 1982. Did the WoO run the wings when they ran Knoxville in 81?

Maybe it was the Roger Larson & Darrell Dawley crash that started the wings at Knoxville. I remember Gary Scott was a big prominent of the wings.

Bob Mays in his book says that the wing were started after Gary Scott's death in 1982 at Knoxville. Doug Wolfgang in his book has a chapter about the Darrell Dawley and Roger Lawson wreck. He was there that night and was just going to watch but a driver go hit by a rock and his owner wanted Doug to drive the car in the feature. He had to start at the back and the start took 3 times and it was very ragged,he was the first person to Darrell and saw that he didn,t make and then helped a friend take off Roger's Helmut and new that he was in bad shape. He got back in the car and said " I drove that SOB for all that it had " he finished 2nd and thought with another lap he had a chance to win, very interesting. Doug's description is very morbid

Going strictly from memory here, often when the "Outlaws" ran Knoxville, they ran wings ('81 Nationals), but it wasn't until Scotts death in '82 that Knoxville made them manditory for all weekly shows after much pleading by many top local teams.
I was there the night of the Dawley/Larson accident as well, which was in '79. It was a tragic season. Wolfie tells it like it was.
