Johnson Wins Warrnambool And Speedweek
Author : Darren ODea

AMERICAN Jason Johnson won round nine of World Series Sprintcars at Sungold Stadium Premier Speedway in Warrnambool on Saturday night and in doing so also won the Speedweek points chase.

Johnson started out of position three in the action-packed 35 lap race, winning from fellow American Craig Dollanksy who started from pole and a hard-charging Max Dumesny who raced well after starting from ninth.

Johnson was quick to thank car owner Alan Haynes and the entire team for putting together a strong race package.

“Everybody has gone a great job all week long,” Johnson said straight after the win.

“I would just like to thank Alan Haynes for giving the invite to come back.”

Haynes held off several challenges from Dollansky as well as Danny Reidy who withdrew with engine dramas while running second.

“I knew Craig was going to be tough on the restart…it was a great race.”

Dollansky moved between second and third much of the battle and finished off strongly after the last restart.

“We started hanging back 10 laps into the race,” Dollansky said.

“Even in the rubber groove I was struggling a little bit.”

He said it was a good result for the team that had only been together for three races.

Dumesny put in a stellar drive, showing plenty of pace and at one stage looked strong enough to challenge for the lead.

He said the car ran well on the bottom.

“It was sitting there great, just picking away at them,” Dumesny said.

“We just stuck at it…yeah it was a fun race.

“Right off the bat it was good – the bottom looked like it was happening so we gave it a whirl and it was good.”

Robbie Farr started seventh and finished fourth and in doing so regained the series points lead which he enjoys by six points over David Murcott who started the A Main in 13th and finished 14th.

“We sort of got rolling around a bit,” Farr said from the infield.

“Fourth is not bad…we were decent but we weren’t great.”

He said the three cars in front of him were better on the night.

“We will take fourth after Avalon the other night.”

Steven Lines finished fifth after starting on the outside of the front row.

The drive of the night went to national champion James McFadden who struggled early on and had to qualify for the main event from the C Main which he won after starting on the front row with Daniel Pestka.

He then started 17th in the B Main and successfully made the transfer to the A Main, starting out of position 20, leaving race fans in no doubt of the national champion’s ability.

Matt Egel started from 14th in the final and also looked strong, finishing seventh.

Grant Anderson was another strong mover, converting a start from 18th to eight while Darren Mollenoyux finished nine and Brooke Tatnell struggled to finish 10th.

One of the heartbreak stories of the round belonged to Reidy who withdrew from the contest after 11 laps and in second.

He started from fourth and looked like he had something in store to get in front when the engine started playing up.

“The motor went off song three laps before that,” Reidy said.

“It may be just a rocker I think it’s a tough deal.”

Dollansky set up his pole position after winning the Gold Dash.

“Definitely a work in progress,” Dollansky said.

He liked the Gold, Silver and Bronzes Dashes unique to the series.

“I think the format works out pretty well…I think it is a pretty cool way to do it.

“Again we will try to make some good tyre choices here.”

Tatnell started off the night well with the best lap in qualifying of 11.876, edging out Lines (11.891) and Dollansky (11.915).

The drivers now have the week to prepare for the two-night round 10 at Titan Garages Brisbane International Speedway next Friday and Saturday night.

Johnson & Sullivan Record New Years Victory At Sungold Stadium
Sunday, 2 January 2011 by Gavin White

Warrnambool’s Sungold Stadium once again produced a racy surface for the running of round 9 of World Series Sprintcars on New Years Day on what could only be described as a perfect day. The final round of ‘Speedweek’ produced a thrilling duel between some of the sports biggest names with Louisiana’s Jason Johnson eventually reigning supreme over Minnesota’s Craig Dollansky while seven time WSS champ Max Dumesny moved from ninth to third by race end. Victorian Chad Sullivan excelled as he sped to the win in the non stop Oval Express Formula 500 series round.

Winning the Vortex Wings Gold Shootout Dollansky started from pole position inside of the ever impressive Steven Lines, Johnson and Danny Reidy filled the second row ahead Ian Madsen and Brooke Tatnell. Robbie Farr and Luke Dillon started on the fourth row ahead of Dumesny and local ace Darren Mollenoyux.

Dollansky paced the field for the first 14 laps before Johnson made his move for the lead in turn 1 on the bottom. With the cushion narrow Dollansky was persisting with the top yet Johnson found the bottom working as did several other challengers late in the race.

The win also sealed the Speedweek title for the popular American visitor as he couldn’t hide the emotion as once again reigned at Sungold Stadium. Driving for Allan Haynes, Johnson was quick to praise the efforts of the car owner and crew chief Brendan Telfer in victory lane.

“It’s all about this race team and I have got a lot of good quality guys behind me,” said Johnson.

“It’s special to win Speedweek especially over five races and to do it over seven days and its credit back to that race team for working their tails off. Those guys don’t sleep much.”

Any track you win at is always a favourite yet Warrnambool’s superb racing surface again was highlighted by the race winner.

“For a driver that was a beautiful racetrack tonight, you could go high or you could go low and you could criss cross the racetrack and move around I think it was a great show,”

Early race leader Craig Dollansky couldn’t replicate his win from twelve months earlier yet he left fans with another sample of his amazing talent. Almost skimming the wall at times Dollansky stayed on the highline throughout the event much to his fans delight,

“We are making progress here and we got a little loose in the feature there and then that track started to rubber up but I thought we might be able to keep our momentum up on top there to overcome it but Jason (Johnson) got a good run on us there and he did a good job tonight,” explained Dollansky.

“I don’t mind running the bottom but I just like the top and I don’t mind it when it gets a bit thin up there either,” confirmed the US ace.

Third placed Max Dumesny made a decisive start when he scooted through to fifth in turn 1 then set about working his way further forward.

“The car was sticking great, Mouse did a great job and I thought if we can keep this up we will be right,” confirmed Max.

One of the first drivers to find speed on the bottom was Danny Reidy who was into second and edging his way closer to race leader Dollansky before retiring 12 laps into the A-main with a motor going away.

“The motor went off about three laps before I pulled in, it’s just a tough deal. Just when you think things are going well something else jumps up and bites you,” lamented Reidy.

Robbie Farr crossed the line behind Dumesny to be fourth ahead of Steven Lines, C-main starting James McFadden, Matt Egel, Grant Anderson, Darren Mollenoyux and Brooke Tatnell in tenth. Jamie Veal, American Lucas Wolfe, Trevor Green, David Murcott and Luke Dillon rounded out the finishers. Cameron Gessner, Ian Madsen, John Vogels and Kerry Madsen all recorded DNF’s.

Kerry Madsen won the B-main ahead of Gessner, Green, Anderson, Wolfe and 17th starting McFadden. The Australian champion also won the C-main ahead of Daniel Pestka who also advanced.

Most of the name drivers were in the B and C-mains due to a freak accident in heat four that saw no less than 9 cars stranded in turn 2 on the second lap. Seven of them unable to restart including Eddie Lumbar, Ash Burke, Kerry Madsen, Gessner, Wayne Rowett, McFadden and Michael Cunningham. Both Darrell Hodges and Max Dumesny finished the heat despite damage that was sustained.

Heat winners on the night were Carl Ludeman (2), Jason Kendrick, Brett Milburn (2), Josh Fisher, Jamie Veal and Kerry Madsen. Brooke Tatnell made a popular return to Warrnambool setting quick time with an 11.876 second lap his best effort.

Another notable to miss the entire night was Stephen Bell who encountered driveline issues in time trials and failed to record a time.

The Oval Express Formula 500 Series was won by local hero Chad Sullivan who stormed to a pole position start in the A Dash when pre race favourites Jake Hagopian and round 2 winner Trevor Harding Junior got together early in the race and were eliminated due to damage sustained.

Sullivan led every lap of the 20 lap final that went non stop while Queensland and Victorian Formula 500 champion Dale Shilletto raced by Matt Brown late in the race to finish second. Brown finished third ahead of eighth starting American star Travis Senter. Trevor Harding finished fifth after starting from 15th while his brother and national champion Daniel finished in sixth. Jye O’Keefe, Mick Pronger, James Aranyosi and Jessica Moulden rounded out the top 10. Next in line was Matt Higgs, Brock Hallett, Dale and Ash Sinclair, Jeremy Beddison, Brad Warwick and Leigh Van Ginneken.

Point leader after 2 rounds was Simon Craven who retired late in the race as did young gun Charlie Brown.

Hallett advanced from the B-main as did Ash Sinclair, Charlie Brown and Warwick. Hallett was quick as he started from position 11 to race by some quick cars.

Round 2 winner Trevor Harding won the opening heat of the night while Matt Brown’s second heat win was 6 seconds quicker than the first as they both went non stop. Sullivan won the third heat but it was Charlie Brown’s flip that got everyone’s attention. The 18 year old managed to walk away after the car sustained plenty of damage however the team rebuilt the car and managed to return to win heat 6. Harding Junior was victorious again in heat 4 while Fresno, California’s Jake Hagopian sped from sixth in heat 5 to take the win.

Sungold Stadium now looks forward to Sunday night, January 9th when the Carline Mufflers National Super Sedan Series and the Oval Express Formula 500 Series headline the program.
