I enjoyed Brian's I 70 uploads!

What's up with I 70?

There was some talk about I 70 running the 2010 season. Did that happen? Is someone promoting there again?

Please advise

Cover it with dirt and the fans will come back. Local asphalt racing is dead. They have tried to keep asphalt late models & mods at that track for years with half full (or less) crowds. Even the former tmulti time track champion quit that track several years ago and runs dirt at Lakeside (KS) ... John O'Neal Jr.

They havent raced there weekly for a good (at least) two years. I recently saw a pic online somewhere, the weeds where pretty high in the grandstands area and the pavement on the track is all broken up (which is why most racers stopped going there from what I understand). It'd take some good $$$$ to get back into racing shape even as a dirt track. In this day and age theres no way those walls would be sufficent, so youd have to tear up the asphault 1st before putting a surface down. I remember seeing a WoO race there as a kid not long after moving to KC in '85 (may have been the 85 or 86 season?) and havent been there since. I can only think about what it could be every time I go bye it on I-70 towards another MO track... kinda sad.

I raced at I-70 for several years. I called it quits before they actually closed it down. It was an awesome place and I'm proud to say I ran there. It basically suffered the same fate as Salem and Winchester. Although both those tracks still run special shows the last I heard. When you have a facility that produced those types of speeds when someone makes a mistake it can cost you a lot more than a wheel and a spindle. When I was running a 2 barrel modified on 8" Goodyears we were in the low 17's on a large 1/2 mile. The late models were in the mid to low 16's with the same motor. Meaning when you crash it turns race cars into boat anchors in the blink of an eye. With the cost of racing skyrocketing every year and the owner doing a poor job of running the place it was inevitable. I live less than 30 min. from there and it hurts every time I drive by it. It's pretty cool that I can tell my kids someday that I raced at the same place as guys like Larry Phillips along with a huge list of other greats. I was told one time that the short track ace Dick Trickle ran there once and said it was the scariest place he'd ever been and those guys were crazy for running there every week. In my opinion throwing dirt on it wouldn't help any with the large number of dirt tracks in close proximity. The owners of I-44 Speedway in Lebanon pulled the dirt off down there and are having some success with there shows. The only problem is that's it's a solid 3 1/2 hours from Kansas City and not everyone likes driving 7 hours for Saturday night for the payouts they have. I'm not bashing em though. I hope it continues to grow. Check out Racinboys.com and go to the asphalt section of the forum. There's lots of great pictures of it in it's hay day.

I'm thinkin' that at some point over the last couple of years, I heard a rumor that they were building, or did build, a 3/8th's dirt track on the same property. NOT the same track.

May have been just a rumor, haven't heard anything since. I dunno.

They did build a dirt track behind the stands of the asphalt track. I never actually watched a race there. I don't think they ran very many. I believe it was only a 1/4 mile or something in that area. It was nothing fancy, although they did have a few Sprint Car shows there before it closed. Now the whole place is just a forest with a big pond. Which if it wasn't at one time a historic and prestigious race track I'd be there all the time. Can't imagine many fish living in there though

There has been A LOT of speculation and misinformation about the track reopening. It's been going on ever since it closed. I am not saying that I know anything for a fact but, I've heard that certain people have came forward and wanted to buy it. Unfortunately the deals always fell through. I'm not going to claim that I know first hand why the deals never worked out but, I'm pretty sure the current owner won't sell or wants to much. Every year that passes without maintenance makes it that much less likely that someone else will wanna buy it. I grew up going to races their. I watched Jimmy Johnson run an ASA car their for Herzog. I watched Adam Petty win an ASA race their. The first of his professional career, even before his ARCA win at Charlotte. I watched Carl Edwards win in a local I-70 Super Truck at the World Cup. I watched Clint Bowyer run his very first race on the asphalt and let me tell you, the guys a gasser. I won my first race in a modified in my first start and he walked by and told me I did a hellofa job. There's a lot of friends of mine with similar stories and it really sucks because from here on out we're gonna have to continue to tell the same ones.

The talk was about re-opening the dirt track, but nothing came from it. I am not very sure how serious the attempt was. A press release was made that they were going to race there, but it was short on details. No rules were ever posted, they never even picked if it was going to be a Friday night or Saturday night track.
