Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series taking shape for 2011
By Gary Thomas
Rio Vista, CA – October 29, 2010…With various changes currently going on throughout the California sprint car landscape the Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series is making strides towards the 2011 campaign, which includes a slight name change to the previously announced title.
After being announced as the “King of the West Sprints Cars” the name has been slightly modified to add “Golden State” back in front, making it the “Golden State King of the West Sprint Car Series” to help keep some of the history alive from the past 25-years of competition.
The overall point fund for the 2011 racing season with the Golden State King of the West Sprint Cars will be a minimum of $100,000 with each night’s A-main event paying a minimum of $3,000-to-win and $500-to-start. The total A-main purse will be $18,250. The Last Chance Showdown with the series will also feature a total payout of $3,250 with $350 going to the first non-transfer and a guaranteed $200-to-start the last chance race.
The series is currently in negotiations with a number of tracks and working towards a projected 30-race schedule for the 2011 season. The series will be visiting many of the same tracks as in years past, with the possibility of a couple new ones added in as well. An official schedule will be released following the annual RPM Promoters Workshop held in Reno in early December.
In addition to attending the RPM Promoters Workshop the Golden State King of the West Sprints will also have a presence at the 23rd annual Performance Racing Industry Tradeshow in Orlando, Florida. The series will have a booth at the tradeshow and are planning to have a final copy of the schedule announced during the event, which is held on December 9, 10 and 11.
“We are really excited about some of the new venues that have called and showed interest in the Golden State King of the West Series for 2011,” said operations manager George Hague. “We currently have a rules committee that will be working on the rule book for 2011 and we are also working on a lot of various things to help bring the promotions part of the series to a new level.”
Membership forms for the 2011 racing season are also being completed and should be available soon.

Sounds like the series is going to do some great things. I can't wait for next season!
Now for my grumpy old-fogey moment: That name is getting pretty awkward. Simple is better. King of the west was good- conveyed the history of "King of California" but also seemed new. I understand wanting continuity by adding the Golden state, but, its getting to be a pretty busy name.
Hopefully you guys can land a series sponsor, then the name could be something like: "Burger Bob's Golden State King of the West that descended from NARC sprint series"
I know, I know, who gives a flip about a name.... :-)

By putting "Golden State" back in the name I think they're just confirming to everyone that they're mostly racing in California still, though I expect we'll see perhaps a few more races in Oregon & Nevada.
I'm excited to see how this deal turns out and I hope to make my way down for a few shows...

Now that Reno-Fernley has re-opened, hopefully they will be back on the schedule since it's only a 25 mile drive for me...........
SUPPORT WILDLIFE, go to a sprint car race!

2011 suggestions from a fan in the stands:
- Move lapped cars to the back .... better racing for the fans
- Change the heat race format. Most heat races have very little passing and are parades. Maybe change to the WoO format with inverting the top 4 and top 2 transfer to the dash.
- Don't race every weekend from March to July. Extend the season to Sept. or Oct. and give the teams a few weekends off
- Create an exciting, weekend event to finish off the season. Make it a big camping, tailgate race weekend with A mains each night, $10K to win the finale. Another option is to make the Cotton Classic event the points season finale.
- Wing sprints are drawing big crowds and decent car counts in central Cali (Kings, Tulare, Ocean, Santa Maria). Continue down the coast in non-wing country and schedule races at tracks like Ventura, Bakersfield, Victorville, PAS..............
- Work with Chico, Skagit and WoO to have the same rules
Good luck to Dan Simpson with this new series as Cali. needed someone to step up and resurrect 410 wing racing in the state. I hope all the drives & tracks work with him for a successful inaugural season.
