Campbell Garners First Career NCRA Sprint Car Triumph!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Park City, Kansas – October 09, 2010 - Coming into the next to final event on the 2010 O'Reilly/NCRA sprint car season, current series points leader had yet to reach victory lane in the previous ten events that had been held. But that all changed Saturday night as the former outlaw sprint car veteran took advantage of race long leader Brian Browns misfortune to pick up the 25 lap feature finale victory Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas.

Jonathan Cornell of Sedalia, Missouri started on the pole for the twenty-five lap feature but it was outside front row starter Brown who took the lead at the drop of the green flag. The caution quickly came out when Sherman Davis spun to a stop in turn two.

On the complete restart the outcome was much the same as Brown again jumped into the lead and quickly opened a ten car length advantage over fourth starting Campbell. While the two front runners began pulling away from the rest of the field, all eyes were on Liberal, Kansas driver Jason Martin. Martin, who started eighth, found the rubber middle portion of the three eighths mile oval to his liking as he began closing in on the leaders. He passed Cornell for third on lap three and set his sights on Campbell for the runner up position on lap eight.

While Brown continued comfortably out front, Campbell and Martin both battled for the second position but just passed the races midway point, a lost cylinder coasted Martin to a stop on the front stretch and brought out the caution.

Only one lap was complete before series regular J.D. Johnson brought out the next yellow flag as he came to a stop at the top of turn four with a blown right rear tire.

This scenario would play out just six laps from the end as Brown, who had as much as a ten car length advantage with ten laps to go, began to slow on lap twenty allowing Campbell to close to his rear bumper. Lap twenty-one was his misfortune as Brown would coast to a stop on the front stretch with a blown right rear tire ending his night.

This gave Campbell, aboard the Danny King owned, #E85 ICM/Ethanol sponsored sprinter, the lead on the restart and despite a late race caution with two laps to go for Jack Dovers blown right rear, held on to take his first career series victory. Cornells first ever series event saw him settle for the runner up position. 2010 Hutchinson Grand Nationals winner Danny Jennings of Norman, Oklahoma started eleventh and brought his Goodyear sponsored Wesmar powered Maxim chassis to a third place finish while C.J. Johnson finished fourth. Jon Freemans strong season continued as he rounded out the top five.

Heat races for the 37 car field were won by J.D. Johnson, Campbell, C.J. Johnson and Davis while defending series champion Garry Lee Maier brought home the twelve lap "B" feature honors.

The next and final event for the 2010 race season will come this coming Saturday night, October 16, as the series makes their stop at the Kansas State Fairgrounds in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The series would like to thank the following for their partnership with the O'Reilly/NCRA sprint car series for the 2010 race season.

Want to add a few comments while attending the festivities at 81 on Sat. night.

First , Thanks David for the props of us attending the event.

C Ray Hall as a Promoter gets it and is doing something right from what I seen Sat. night. Big Field of Sprint Cars and Mods and a really BIG Crowd Sat. night, 2nd Biggest I have seen this season right behind Lucas Oil Speedway crowd for the TNT show back in July.

Sat in the stands ,first time since the 90's to sit in the Stands at 81 and C Ray understands the numbers game in promoting charges $9 to get in and get a bunch of folks to show up and get their money in other ways with concessions and whatever else you can sell them and not just with the get in the event ticket price. Spent about $35 bucks for 2 of us at the place Sat. night and walked away feeling like I got my money's worth.

See where he sells lots of signs and they are all over the place and even got them hanging in the restrooms ,got a bar with frosty beverages and all the old pics which is a very cool deal, Concessions stand food is good , was well entertained by the pretty rowdy crowd of Mod fans that sit in the stands, most of which are ol girls and well lets just say they can get quite pissed at fans around them when one does not yell for her/their favorite driver, got quite interesting a few times during the evening.

Like the announcers Warren Hardy and Co. always kept the show interesting and interviewing Shane Carson and talking about SFS shutting down and racing in general was very interesting as well as drivers throughout the night and some of those Youth Mini Stock drivers interviewed during the intermission , which some sound like they went to Nascar PR school listening to them get interviewed , pretty good stuff and also kind of wondered about the race track since he changed it up last Spring and it still is a good racy track.

Also like the fact that he pretty much keeps the show running along and can checkered flag a race when it has to many spins and not much racing, have not seen that done in a while and think that should be done more often at shows and the yellow flag still starts more cars after spins as I see it does in Kansas as well, program did run long but it all cannot be perfect. 81 also does the misting with water technique and I guess that is the coming thing so need to get use to it I guess. Was surprised to see Chad Howell up at 81 and did well in the A main and also thought Danny Jennings was going to make it get interesting before the last yellow came out with a couple of laps to go , seemed to be reeling in Cornell and Campbell as all were approaching lap traffic.

Also went to BMS Friday night and pretty good show, Brill just needs to keep on working on his facilities and main grandstands would be a good thing to start with. Like those E Sprints at the place, Racing was good Friday night and my friend James Lenhart was the only one who got out of BMS along with Mark Brill Friday night with any $$$ , the guy won the 50/50 $70 and then Sat night we continue our Racino tour on the way home from 81 and the guy pockets another grand plus some and better yet it is the 4th week in a row on our Racino tour that he has bank rolled the Casino's , good to be James Lenhart these days plus it kept him wide awake thinking of how he is gonna spend all that money he is making on the tour.

The intermission was way to long but other than that, it was a good first visit to 81 Speedway.

JD I agree with eveything you said in post.

I went to 81 a few months ago. I told people that I had not felt that way at a race track in a long time.

ib, like I said all cannot be perfect.

Erich, The place still has that magic, just felt like this past Sat. night I attended a racing event and not just another race. Kind of like back in the 70's and 80's with the Super Modifieds and Champ Dirt NCRA shows they had then.

I enjoyed it too and agree with JD and with the fact that the intermission was way tooooooo long. But we all know the reason for that, don't we.

From my understanding intermission wasn't suppose to take that long. Trust me when I say that it normally isn't.

JD, glad you and the wife and James were able to make it along with other Oklahoma fans. I recognised some as to why I called you all out.

Yes, Danny was coming but it would have been interesting to see what Jason Martin had for them as he was a coming and fixing to make things interesting before he dropped a cylinder.

Ibracin, missed you again.

Kenny, wish you would have let me know you were there so I could see you.

Carson was in the condo trying his best to give us updates but all he knew is that it didn't look good. My understanding is Stewart assisted with travel as well.

I thought the first four finished about where they should have. Garry Lee was coming too and it was fun to watch him work the field on a track that is very familiar to him. Brian Brown had everyone covered until the tire went down and finally shredded.

Sorry I missed you David. I talked to Shane for a bit. I had to laugh about the interview over the PA when Warren asked Shane so many WoO questions. I've been emailing Warren for a few years now asking why the WoO never appears there any more. Last time they did, it was shoulder to shoulder in the grandstands -- same thing for the All Stars. You'd think they'd figure out that they have a crowd that likes sprinters. In any event, he sure talked a lot of WoO for a track that doesn't feature the series any more.

Was it really that great with how many blown right rear tires?

The only tire that I saw blow was Brown's. If there were others, I missed it. There weren't any more among the top contenders. I am sure we would have seen more had the race lasted another 5-10 laps.

Dovers RR blew out with a few laps to go and I think maybe one other pulled off with a tire going down about 3/4 of the way through the race. Pretty good race I thought , with the way the Winged Sprint Car Races are locked down today sometimes blown tires and yellow flags seem to make it interesting, tires cool and seal over and on restarts can create passing and lead changes. Ask Eric Baldicini at Lawton a couple of weeks ago at Lawton.

Still would have like to have seen what traffic would have done to the final outcome Sat. night at Wichita. Guess the would of's and could of's don't matter Campbell won it and it was a good show in my opinion.

Hope to make it to Hutch this weekend if I can get all my lawns scheduled for Saturday done in time. Thank goodness for earlier sunsets.
