Thursday night there was a serious injury to a push truck driver that the P.A. announcer said was nothing but a "situation". WTF the guy was hit hit the head with one of the many rocks that make Chico dangerous. Last year in the $50 seats we sat in the guy 3 rows down got his head split open, prompting me to be able to move around by buying a pit pass to watch the race with protection. Its amazing the minimization that the track announcer gave the incident. But if you want to crowd family's in shoulder to shoulder and empty their wallets keep the danger on the under. What is it going to take for the track promoter to accept responsibility his choice of "clay" providers? a missing eye? or death?

cirticising an announcer for not being dramatic enough when a push truck driver gets hit with a rock is stupid. you are in the minority when you say the announcer didn't pay enough attention to the guy hit with the rock. youwill probably see the truck driver in the pits tonight. if he's a race fan he'll be back. your ticket YOU bought says it - Racing is a dangerous sport - nothing's guaranteed including your safety. I sit in the bleachersand get mud you know where and have never been hit with a rock. i wouldn't want the annoucner to talk about me if I got hit.

If you don't want dirt.....I think they have one of those "rectal tracks" up at Anderson or down in Roseville!

Did any of you see it happen?? I did...the guy was standing on his truck in the push off lane about 75 to 100 feet closer to the track then the pit stands ..I know I would never stand there, way to close to the track, not only for flying rocks but cars have crashed right there many times over the years I have been going there.

If the announcer down played the situation it was prob cause it was not life threating..He was hit in the mouth/jaw area and was going to be fine... But what if it was worse?? Should the announcer get everyone in the stands and the pits all worried and sacred for there safety? Doesn't sound like a good idea to me... I think we all know the risks of going to a dirt track and if you are really worried you should not go or sit a little further away from the track....IMO....

according to moolie the announcer should have broken down and cried and then called for a vote to shut down the nights racing

moolie, you say 4 or 5 beers like its a bad thing. its GOLD CUP. if you cant turn loose here stay the hell home. maybe the announcer was told what to say but maybe he realized the guy was goin gto be ok and gave it the attention it deserved. you crying about it not being enough is stupid. i stand by my statement.

I wasnt there for this "situation" but I have not attended one single Gold Cup where I didnt see a spectator getting cracked in the head with both rocks and HUGE chunks of clay. Turn 4 is full combat mode. I wear safety glasses at most winged shows due to dust and minor dirt debris but at Chico I wear them to save my eyes from a rock. I saw an elderly individual get bloodied up last year. I saw a good friend get hit in the family jewels with about a 5 pound chunk of clay a few years back (he was in PAIN) I have personally been nailed in the chest, side of the head and stomach with rocks all while sitting in the turn 4 grandstands at the top. If you sit lower lookout....ouch!

Been to Chico for the Gold Cup about 4 years ago, was getting my tickets early there was a couple in the office they told me to go get a pair of safety goggles glad I listened to them. Was like a war zone sitting there. Could say something about the security service but I will stick to the rocks flying, sounded like a very big hail storm here in the Midwest.

My regular glasses have polycarbonate(safety) lenses. The way I look at it, I only have two eyes that aren't replaceable but I can always repair a tooth.

There is this thing called the "HIPPA PRIVACY RULE". It is nation wide. Check it out and you will see why the announcer didn't give the details of this individuals injuries. Just like they cannot give the condition of a driver after an accident.

Long story, short.. The first year Fred Brownfield took over Elma and had the outlaw show there..My racing comrade at the time and I thought it would be cool to trade our bleacher seats for pit passes on the final night. The top of the pit bleachers at that time was about 10 or so feet above the track in between 3-4. All you could hear is a machine gun fire hittin the fence..It was flippin crazy to say the least..needless to say I stick to the bleachers after that..
