That last couple of years we have been able to see Knoxville and few other tracks on television and were able to watch sprint car racing from the comfort of our sofa's. Some of us no longer live where we can watch sprint cars without getting on a plane and our few times to watch a race are supplemented with live tv, or more often taped shows and what you wonderful few put on the internet.(Knoxville has a great show) Which brings me to the Outdoor Channel. People on here always complain about speed or espn, but without a doubt the leader of hated tv coverage was the outdoor channel. Every Wednesday we got to see Tri State, Beaver Dam, Knoxville, Skagit, Paramatta, Perris, Manzanita, Williams Grove, Attica and more. We got to see 3-4 heats, a full b main and an A main in one quick hour. Is there any chance we will ever get this again? The best part was, it was a Wednesday. It never competed against other tracks and we got to "visit" tracks that most of us never have the chance to go to.

I miss those Outdoor Channel broadcasts as well. I remember them showing the outlaws down under that first year in from PCR in 04 when they were rained out at Terre Haute. I didn't get it on tape but they also showed the Dirt Cup that year but with the local track announcers instead of Doty and Art Eckman. Shane Stewart won going away but it was fun watching TK, Steve Kent and Haud in the Cowan 7t (TK's old ride) going at it tooth and nail.

Speaking of Art, he was painful to listen to early on but he got better as time passed.

I don't remember a Kings Royal on a Friday. But like some of you, I loved the Outdoor Channels coverage of the races. I turned a lot of people onto WoO racing because of their showing the races. Plus I got to see a lot of tracks I had never been to.

TV coverage is fine as long as it is on a tape delayed basis. For our sport to survive it is vital for short tracks to use TV and the internet as a way to build new fan interest, not as a substitute for sitting in a seat at the track. Dave Argabright has a great column on this issue in this month's Sprint Car and Midget Magazine.

I have had several conversations with so-called race fans over the past few years which goes something like this. "So you're a race fan?" "Oh yeah I love NASCAR". "Have you ever been to a live race of any kind?" "Nah, I can watch at home for free." We do not want our part of the sport to become this!

Yes, I was there. You are correct about the time and the TV staying with it live and all. But remember, the King's Royal itself is only on Saturday. The Friday night show is a completely separate race and has been since very early on in King's Royal history (I think the first 1-3 races were two-day shows - someone will have to help me out on that). That's what MRZERO is getting at.

One thing I remember about the Outdoor Channel was the bitching and moaning by people saying it wasn't good enough, it should be on Speed and etc.

Also, didn't it help bring down the NST because sponsors like Budweiser and Quaker State wanted tv exposure?

Like the song, "you never know what you've got til it's gone...".

Its great to see Steve Kent's name on your post Petey. He was my favorite for years back when I lived in California.

You guys miss watching the races, I miss shooting the races. Its been nice to hear people in the past few years (just a few), comment how they thought our Outdoor Channel coverage was better than what Speed was able to produce. It was fun as hell going to all of the different tracks across the U.S. to get some of those races on T.V. Not too bad concidering our crew consists of 6 adults, 3 kids, & a 20 foot trailer.

I never got to see Steve race but I definitely remember him from the Slick 50 sprint car world series days (Manzy and Canyon Raceway). He was one of the best out of Cali. I have the video from the first Historical Big One weekend in 93 and he was there in the Selma Shell 11h. I guess he was the first of many great drivers in that car?

I have that Fri. night marathon from Eldora in 97 on tape. Amazing that they stayed with it all night.

A charger for sure from Fresno. Very exciting to watch. Was King of California for the first few years. Nice guy too. Went by the nickname "the sock" for a little while-a take-off on Ron Shuman's "the shoe". We used to love it when he came up to Baylands , and he was absolutely fearless at the old Kings Speedway in Hanford.

And what I'm getting at is that MRZERO is a nitpicker.
