I'm not disputing he's good at his craft, as any craftsman should be with as many years of experience as he has......still no answer to my question though.

As checkered48 stated, the "Slammin" nicname was coined by a track announcer, early in Swindell's career, who was impressed by the way he slammed the right rear against the cushion.

What was so special about his drive at the Nationals? How many sliders did Schatz throw at him and he outdrove every one of them? In the later stages, before the Brown yellow, didn't he open up a 3/4 stretch lead in traffic? Wasn't he damned fast and damned smooth, never appearing to miss his mark? Opinions are like a$$holes, and mine is that he ran one helluva race.

Talking about the Chili Bowl, what about the year (I don't remember which year it was) he came from one of the E's to lead the A before breaking? That was incredible.

racinround, were you even there?!?!? I am by no means a Sammy fan, but the sliders he was throwing at Schatz and I have never seen anybody push their sprint car to the limits he was while still being in control. I used to be one of the guys booing him yet I even had to go down in the pits after the races and shake the mans hand after the races for the show he put on.

OMG !!! A Couple Slide Jobs while on the edge!!!! How rare is that!!??!! LOL Sounds like you need to take in some Non wing shows. Sliders and Passing are actually common place in that form of the sport.

Sour grapes I see. So, I take it that no matter what is said, your mind is made up. But the numbers do not lie, the number of fans AND non-fans cheering him before he hit the track, the number of fans AND non-fans cheering him after the tire let go, the number of fans and non-fans praising him here in this forum. So I will ask what was asked earlier. Were you even there? How about for the 360 Nationals? Or the last 410 "tune up"? Or the Front Row Challenge? He was clearly the best in every facet of the 10 days in Iowa, those who were there, fan or non-fan know exactly what I'm talking about. The man was putting his car safely in places where nobody else dared. The minority (you) have such a deep seated hatred for the man that you would never acknowledge his "amazing" runs last week if your life depended on it. So sad, it is your loss to not be able to SEE greatness, no matter who it is.

I've been attending sprint car (or supermodifieds as they were called in the midwest in the 60's and early 70's, and Knoxville at that time was referred to as the "Supermodified Capitol of the World" ) since 1965. From that time through the early 80's most of the racing I attended was nonwing, and I still go watch nonwing every chance I get.

Some people really go off the deep end.....pretty damn funny...

Mr "Truth Detector".....If you read the top post on this page you'd see I expressed that I think Sammy is a good shoe, and I've the utmost respect for his driving abilities. I haven't said a single negative thing about his ability. I know all about his performance while at Kville...he did a hell of a job......but my question was about SATURDAY NITE....Not 2 days before, a week, month or year ago.

And what the hell difference does it make if a person was there or not?? Cant ask a question or have an opinion if not there??? Don't get all butt hurt just because you don't like the question or opinion. As for the "deep seated hatred"....WTF are you talkin about little buddy?? Chill bud....LOL

One more question Mr T.D......don't get all bumpy on me now but........is that YOUR truth, or the Real truth that you detect?

Have a GREAT day!!

P.S.nice rant TD

Nothing "the tearful one" does will ever impress me. In 30 plus years I have seen him deliberately dump and destroy countless racecars of "lesser" competitors with purpose and no remorse. He is the dirtiest driver in the history of sprint car racing , period.

I think Sammy Swindell is one of the greatest racers of all time. He is always amazing to watch. People always so that he is rude and a @ss but I dont see that. I saw him smiling and talking to people at the nationals. Sammy is there to race and make a living for his self and his family not to be everyones best friend. I respect the man for that. People always say Karl Kinser when you think of great crew cheifs and things he has introduced to the sport. But I think Sammy Swindell is one of the greatest crew cheifs of all time also. For years now he has been setting up his own cars working on his motors constantly and introducing new things to sprint car racing. Not to take anything away for Karl he was the man for sure. To see Steve and Sammy racing today is amazing these guys race like there in there 20s and there both in the 50s it is amazing how great they both are. So all the bashers out there take some time out to think of how much this sport will lose when Swindell and Kinser retire it will change racing forever.

This is an extremely interesting thread to put it mildly.

I've been a Sammy fan for most of my 40 years. Do I begin to deny he can be aggressive? Absolutely not. Does he go around wrecking people out every other lap... or every lap as some of you appear to believe? No.

It's interesting when someone gets wrecked from behind that they absolutely never have ANY fault in the least. They held their line perfectly, weren't spewing oil all over the place, didn't have mystery brake checks, never chopped off the guy trying to pass them, never blocked at all, never had parts falling off their car, never slowed down due to a car in front of them... nothing that poor defenseless wrecked car could have done differently. The guy in back was WRONG. End of story.

Well, on the highway a lot of that would equal a "failure to control speed" ticket. I know. I received one once in a chain reaction rear end wreck where 5 cars tagged each other at a fairly slow speed.

On the race track... it happens.

Sammy isn't the only driver to have ever punted someone. Thinking your beloved favorite driver, whomever they may be, hasn't done the exact thing tells me that your driver runs 19th in weekly races at a local race track an awful lot.

Big time racers give it and they take it. Did Mark Kinser ruin Sammy's Knoxville Nationals a few years by plowing into him from behind? Nah... Mark is a school bus driving hero. He never did anything wrong. Never gave the most confusing victory lane speeches ever. Never did that. Won all his races and gave the money to charity. Robin Hood Kinser.

Revisionist history is amazing, even by message board standards. Sammy is aggressive. He's been in some "bad deals". Caused some, was involved in some, received some. Racing 100+ nights a year for 30 years will do that to you.

The man is one of the greatest ever. Cheer for him... boo for him... do whatever you want. Sammy is likely one of those drivers that doesn't care what you do as long as you buy a ticket.
