Shake Up Jacob – In“tuition” NEWTON (August 12, 2010) – Knoxville, Iowa welcomed the stars of the 360 sprint car world to town last weekend for the 20th Annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals. It was another weekend of learning for seventeen year old Jacob Ossenfort and the Ossenfort Racing team as they delved into their first time at the historic event.
Friday night was the last round of qualifying and Jacob qualified mid pack, of fifty-three cars. “Qualifying went alright. It wasn’t our best time, but it did catch the invert perfectly and gave me the pole position for my heat race. I wasn’t sure whether to run the high line or the low line, so I had to play a little guessing game. I think we did a good job with what we had.” Jacob said of his qualifying session.
The Knology #99J was set to start in the pole position for his heat race and up receiving those results, Jacob also received some pointers from fellow competitor, past Knoxville Raceway Champion and current Knoxville Raceway 410 series points leader, Brian Brown. “He told me how to drive the car and also told us how to set up the car to hold my starting spot. When I went into the first corner, I knew the race was going to be a great race. Brian told me to ease up on the cushion, which I did and I was able to lead the whole race! I walked away with a heat race win and I was very excited, as it was against some of the best 360 drivers in the nation.” Jacob said. It was an incredible race for Jacob as he battled with some of the best to hold his first place position.
After a heat race win, Jacob was set to start seventeenth for the night’s main. Points from the Friday night events would come into play for Saturday’s final main events, so the entire night was very important. “We had the car way too tight to run at the top of the track and way too loose to run at the bottom, so it was a challenge. The more I run on tracks like that though, the more it will help me improve.” Jacob said making a mental note. The Knology #99J finished the night in a hard-earned twenty second position.
Saturday night was full of final events and after Friday night’s results, Jacob was set to start second row outside for the C-Main. “It was one of the more disappointing races of the season and I feel like I should have known better but it’s another lesson learned. We had the car way too tight. I thought that all of the racing previous to our main would have dried the track out, but it didn’t.” Jacob had to say of the C-Main event. Although it was a battle between the driver and the track, Jacob and the Knology #99J brought home the eighth place finish for the team’s fist 360 Knoxville Nationals event. “It was an exciting week and we had a lot of fun last weekend. I can’t wait to get back and do it all over again next year!” Jacob said of the experience.
It’s off to the University of Wyoming for the Ossenfort’s this week! Jacob is set to head off to school for his freshman year. “I’m very excited about this next step, but I’m really wishing that race season wouldn’t have gone by so fast,” said Jacob.
