It depends on the reason that you can't make qualifying; if you're at the track and set for qualifying, but do not run, you get last place qualifying points for that night. And since you do not race in the heat or the C or B mains, last place points again. Which pretty much seals your fate for the week...
Teams have switched qualifying nights in the past, but I cannot ever recall a car scratching from one night's show to run the next night. Even a big name. like Steve Kinser, had to race a completely different car/number on the second night of qualifying(owned by Bob Trostle) back in 1980, when his car crashed/quit on his original qualifying night.
