4. Mike Sweeney (Lewis #91)
5. Charlie Zabinski (Zabinksi #70)

PURSE: $11,750

Rip Williams, along with the warm night air, blistered the 3/8 mile oval to capture the 30 lap feature. Starting from the fast time position (8th), Williams slid the Wilkerson #11 under Charlie Zabinski out of turn four on lap 9 and cruised to his 3rd win of the season.

Despite a 15th lap yellow and lap 24 red, Ron Shuman and Chuck Gurney were unable to keep up with "The Ripper" and the two settled for 2nd and 3rd. Shuman did it with the Morales #2 while Gurney wheeled the Ford powered Fontana #43.

The feature had two red flag stoppers. Jerry Meyer rolled the Bromme #3 on lap 4 in the south turn while Ron DiDonato did it on the 24th lap in the same corner. Jerry's Bromme was termed "it's final roll" while Ron left the track hurting with a sore back.

Keith Nafzger (San Jose) drove his first "wingless" sprinter and paid the dues in time trials. Keith ripped through the chain-linked fencing and landed upside down in the third turn pits. Nafzger spent the better part of the night getting his broken collar bone treated.

I remember Keith's flip well. He arrived late and missed hot laps. I don't recall why but he had towed his car down in Don & Linda O'Keefes trailer. Don wanted to get the car rolling in to the trailer so he could get it out in the morning. From the time Keith went to the hospital I helped Don and Linda get that thing in there. We finished just in time to watch the A main.

Keith's flip made Speedworld or whatever ESPN's highlight program was in those days.

It used to be a lot of fun to drive to Hanford for the CRA shows.
