TRUE STORY John.......don't see tracks like that for qualifying any more. It was too wet early but that was a day show and it never took rubber, decent cushion all day. Seems like Wolfie won that day in Doug and Joanne Howell's 4 car.

Sunset was northwest of Omaha near Irvington on 114th and State Streets. It was mainly a stock car track - one of the best in the Midwest, but they ran a couple of WoO shows in the early 80's. I was there at one of them, it was really hot and dusty as I recall.
The city got too big and neighbors started to complain, so the track owner was paid handsomely to shut it down after the 2000 season. The remnants of the track are still there, but it's mostly grown over with weeds. Really sad to see.
Is this heaven?
No, it's Iowa....Knoxville, Iowa.

Shane, you wouldn't happen to have any photos of the red #51 that you drove for Richard Tharp? Would love to see that sprinter again. Remember you at the Knoxville Nationals a few years ago in this car. Can't recall the year though!

One thing I do have is photos. Fast Lane Photos from OKC shot this at Kilgore in 84. We had a string of wins there in TX when the Outlaws came to town....we did not win that one.
Owner,Richard Tharp was a national Champion Top Fuel driver that put together a first class team.
Shaver motors with J&J Chassis. Really nice car.
It was a tough season with a part time schedule but we had some really good runs.

So many pics, so many memories. Always liked it when you came out west to drive Aggies car. When the fans would get the press release you were coming prior to the night of the race, it was always: "Oooooooo boy, that frizzied hair Outlaw from Oklahoma is coming out!"
Always got a kick out of the fact I had seen you race endless times and the others were just getting a glimpse of you in action. Aggie had a real liking for you.

Shane you need to work with Lanny and get the WoO back
to Lawton/Devil Bowl or maybe Texas Motor Speedway.
Not having any major events here in the Texoma area anymore really stinks!
Devils Bowl on Fri/Lawton on Sat/OKC on Sun...those were great times!

Wow... best thread I've seen on here probably ever!
The Suchy's 76 champ dirt car... I swear at the Bowl Shane could have qualified for the WoO races run with the NCRA races. It was SOOOOOOO fast! Light years ahead of the competition.
Shane could really get some reaction out of posting a Garrett 12 car... when it was still a Maxwell chassis. Nice! Sold to Wagner/Helms; ended up being a strong relationship with Mr. Helms, whom we all miss.
51 car... man that was a sharp machine. Unfortunately our family's sponsored car finished just behind that 51 car on most of the races on Shane's streak. Oh well lol. Pure alcohol in that motor, right Shane? Probably didn't need anything more to be honest.
Thanks to Mr. Hafertepe for reviving Lone Star... it's a true shame that the WoO or ASCS don't visit that track outside the backstretch at TMS. It would sure be a treat to see a one day WoO race at the Bowl... to bring back the fans to that track. That would be a slice of heaven.
Bellmire 17!!!!! Wow, that's a trip down memory lane. I've seen some 70s pics in magazines... and sure enough there was the Bellmire 17. There were still going at it in the early/mid 80s. Big block power at times.
Thanks to all the contributions to this thread; this made my day.
