Hodnett comes from behind to win Summer Nationals

Greg Hodnett came from behind to win the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday night and kept the Pennsylvania Posse’s win streak alive at eight in a row.

His victory in the final night of the Summer Nationals was worth $20,000.

“The red gave Lee (Stauffer) a chance to work on the car,” Hodnett said. “He made some changes and the car just rolled through the corners. I am very fortunate to be standing here. It just worked out for us that the top went away. I figured if I slowed down and was patient, those guys would burn their tires off.”

Sammy Swindell started second and drove into the lead. Jason Sides started fourth and took second from Paul McMahon on the first lap.

Sides tried to drive under Swindell in turn one, but couldn’t make the pass. The first yellow of the event flew on lap two when Brian Leppo stopped in turn two after contact with Tyler Walker.

Swindell picked the outside for the double-file restart. Swindell maintained control on the restart as Australian Kerry Madsen and Jason Meyers got by Hodnett.

Brian Montieth spun in turn one bringing out the caution on lap five. Hodnett, of Thomasville, started third, but was back to eighth at this point.

McMahon took the runner-up spot from Sides on the restart. Saldana also drove by and Meyers took fifth from Madsen.

Walker made contact with Madsen in turn four racing for sixth. Madsen never stopped, but the caution flew because he slowed dramatically with cars all around him.

The red flag was displayed for a fuel stop and this was the break Hodnett needed.

McMahon drove by Swindell to take the lead on backstretch and was the leader on lap 16. Hodnett drove off the bottom and passed Swindell and Saldana to take second lap 18.

Hodnett slowly closed on McMahon running the bottom and he McMahon off turn two and was the new leader on lap 26.

The leader was in heavy lapped traffic with three laps to go. Hodnett was able to maintain the lead using the bottom and scored the win over McMahon, Sides, Swindell and Chad Layton. Lance Dewease, Saldana, Walker, Steve Kinser and Sam Hafertepe Jr. were in the top 10.

Cubic....please let your writer know it is McMahan.

We out here are proud of Paulie and like to see his name spelled correctly.

As long as Paul has been out racing in major series I am still amazed when a writer doesn't spell his name correctly!

Thanks,

If Paul would have moved to the bottom Greg would have never caught him

A common complaint you hear about sprint cars... they all look alike. They all ARE Maxims or Maxim copies.

With that in mind: I noticed in the pic of Hodnett in this thread that it's a short tube front end, whatever the "proper" name is, where the torsion bars are much shorter and appear "end to end" (yes, I know there is a space between them).

How many different chassis configurations has Hodnett run this year? The Florida car... VERY different looking front end/chassis/body.

Didn't he run a car late last year that had 1 torsion bar in the front (a la Karl Kinser)???

Noticed in the Jason Meyers article in SC&M Magazine... one of the pics had a short tube chassis, others no.

SOOOOOOO... my nice, "no need to bash on this topic" topic of the day... are we seeing some new/old chassis ideas being thrown around again?

In the day of tire rules (everyone runs the same)... any individuality is cool, to me at least. IMO

Thoughts?

Top Posse teams have always pushed the envelope since the days of Bobby Allen and Steve Smith. That's why it is so tough around here. Stauffer and Hodnett have run a half bar car since the Apple days, Dewease ran his own car for a while and Rahmer is a guinea pig for Don Ott.

Wow. You should be a used car salesman. It takes talent to call an Ott small block chev Maxim with Goodyears unique or different! I love unique hot rods but that ugly number 22 isn't one. The current stack of 410 rules and chevyitis make sure no one shows up with anything different. The only thing close to different is the Mopar. You know..... that engine under the hood of the fastest sprint car in the world.

Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

I would vote when 40 or so cars run a fairly traditional 4 bar car and 1 has the short bars in front... that qualifies as "different". Perhaps too subtle for some folks... but "it is what it is".

Find some pics of the front end of the chassis/body of the "ugly" 22 car in Florida. Very different.
