It's official, I need a Knoxville fix as I can't wait for the Nationals! With that in mind I was wondering what your favorite traditions or parts (aside from the actual racing) of Nationals week (meeting up with friends in the campground, tipping a few at Dingus, people watching outside the track on Saturday, shopping cart races in the HyVee lot, Armory pancakes, etc)?

Too many to list them all....but, I can tell you without a doubt, the worst day of the year is the day after they are over....

Biggest understatement in the history of sprint car message boards!
Perfectly put, jtc... that Monday sucks.

I ALWAYS ENJOYED...
Breakfast at the Downtown Cafe (now closed as I understand)
Late lunch/early supper at UDDERS! Yum, yum!
And the racing...that was okay.
I also enjoyed daily drives to surrounding "towns" checking out antique and hardware stores.
Also, the Wal Mart over in Indianola...local "old guys" sitting having coffee and talking about the old days. That was great.
TSA...It's not a GROPE...it's a Freedom Pat!

1. Quarterscale remote control car races. Great racing for free. Satisfies my racing fix during the day.
2. The atmosphere of just being around the fairgrounds.

Between the racing I enjoy relaxing, catching up on my reading, getting a lot of sleep. I always feel so refreshed after the nationals.

I always liked just walking the grounds in the afternoon watching the crews work on the cars.

Food vendors are something to look forward to. The bands and reunions after the races have been a huge draw and a ton of fun. It's great free entertainment and keeps the party going after the racing is over.

Friday night after the races is always the best. People everywhere talking about the line up for Saturday night, having a few drinks and alot of laughs, the chicken feed at the west end and most of all not having a care in the world. It is the one week out of the year you can just chill and live in the moment. They need to have a spring nationals.

Gotta love everything about Knoxville but, the hall of fame, go-kart slick track, Adventureland Park in Des Moines, can't forget Osky, and the place right outside of turn 1, I believe its called Cattlemen's??? It's the best food in town!

The trade show... all the cool exhibits.
The midway behind the stands... if they don't have a tshirt you like, you don't need one.
Walking through the pits after the races... 100 sprint cars? are you serious? at one time??????? WOW.
Talking to the people you read about in Open Wheel all the time that don't race near you.
Driving by signs that say "beware of snow drifts" when it's 100 degrees and high humidity. I feel for people that live in Iowa. Talk about extremes!
The best pork chop sandwiches known to man. Bar none.
The sheer intensity you can cut with a knife when the A main's green drops. This is NOT just another feature.
Getting to the races 4 hours early to get the earliest possible scoop.
Being around so many people with common interest. In Dallas... 1 out of every maybe 100 people might have heard of sprint cars... maybe. In Knoxville? Whole town does!!!!!!! Is this heaven? NO, IT'S IOWA!!!!!!

Getting to see drivers I hadn't seen in a while and each and every one of them tell me how excited they were to be at the Nationals, true story!
Seeing friends I hadn't seen in even a longer time, many of them who I got to see once a year, the Nationals.
Spending time at my booth with sprint car racing's biggest fan Shawn McDonald, what a blast that was. Sharing adult refreshments with anyone who was thirsty and rehashing the A-Main with people who were cheering and those that were booing the outcome, always taking the opposite side of whatever they were saying, lol. Might have been my favorite 4 days each year for a dozen or so years and likely my favorite times for the 60 I've spent on this planet. Enjoy yourself and under no circumstance should you, Take It Easy...

The crowds going nuts when something big happens (photo finish in a heat for a transfer, under dog on the podium, Lasoski/Brown incident). The tshirts are great too I love getting shirts from guys that only come around Knoxville for the Nationals

Many of my favorites have already been mentioned and I agree heading home afterwords NO MATTER WHERE you are headed SUCKS! One of my favorite things was to go to your booth to chat with you and while chatting go through all the pictures so that I could turn all the Sammy Swindell ones upside down :-)
