CRA SPRINT CARS
Ascot Park - Gardena, California
July 22, 1978

CAR COUNT: 39

FAST TIME:
Dean Thompson (Bruce Bromme #3) - 20.279

TROPHY DASH:
Mike Shaw (Greg Cunningham #20)

HEAT RACE WINNERS:
1. Rick Goudy
2. Jimmy Oskie
3. Paul Sylvester
4. Buster Venard

CONSOLATION:
Scott Dennison (Morales Bros. #86)

SEMI-MAIN WINNER:
Gary Howard (Don Blair #13)

FEATURE: (30 laps)
1. Lee James (Chuck Howard #15)

PURSE: $4,634

Lee James, driving the Chuck Howard Chevy, went wire-to-wire to win the 30-lap feature.

Highlight of time trials was seventh fast time by rookie Ric Paronelli in the 20s, a rarity for a rookie at Ascot.

The heat races featured a win for Paul Sylvester in heat 3. Sylvester seems to be improving each week and looked good winning his heat.

The feature was like a freight train, with James, Jimmy Oskie, Thompson, Rick Goudy, and Buster Venard tail to nose the entire 30 laps. The feature was run with four yellows and had the fans on their feet the last three laps.

Best passing job was by veteran Tom Roa, 13th to 7th.

Racer of the night a toss up between James and Oskie, with James getting the edge due to his fast main event ride without faltering once.

This was my fourth sprint car race at Ascot since moving to So-Cal from Oklahoma where I had been enthralled with supermodified racing. Just like I told myself when I was at my first race a month prior, I said to myself: "Wow! You Californian's really got it going on out here!" wink

Never having to sit on those cram packed freeways make it hard to get that urge. Do miss my racing frat members there though. Miss speedway bike racing a TON!

Dont think I havent thought how cool that would be. Got enough colleges surrounding me along with the proven racing fan base that I think it would go over well. One problem though.....

NO Bikes! frown

Thanks Scott. Im a watchin! Until you posted that, I thought we were talking TV but its always been the web you keep telling us about. Id have a gold mine if I can just figure out how to use my VCR to tape off the web feed. wink

PS: Typical crowd for Europeans. Just amazing how they get those numbers. Looks like a football crowd in the background as the bikes go zooming around.
