What the heck was Ray Evernham doing running a 305 sprint at Knoxville?

He was doing pretty good considering - riding along in second ... and then his motor let go .... hope he has a spare little bullet.

Erin Betty Crocker Evernham is racing tonight with the big boys. Think she was 8th in her heat race.

Still have a C,B, Dash and A to run.

Erin got collected in Brown's flip in her heat and got tore up - no C tonight due to attrition

Probably a little more fun than late models, and napcar wink

Ray was on SpeedTV's Charlotte WoO broadcast last weekend saying that his wife will be running semi-regularly at Knoxville to tune up for the Nationals. They have hired Guy Forbrook. I imagine that Ray's ride last night was an offshoot of that deal. Whether he will make a habit of it or just crossed another track off of his bucket list, who knows. Ray was an east coast asphalt mod guy before he met JG and looked halfway decent in the several dirt (IMCA-style) modified races I have seen him run. He will be middle to the back of the pack during next weeks late model Prelude to the Dream if history is any indication.

What was he doing? I for one don't care... I just say COOL!!!!!

Ray was always awesome to listen to on the radio with Jeffypoo. I always had a ton of admiration for him. One of the best coaches on a pit box for sure.

He owns a dirt track and is involved with dirt racing. Moral of the story: COOL!

I agree. I appreciate his interest/dedication to sprint cars and dirt tracks. Was fun to seem him "giving it a go"...

There is an old "wive's tale" about a testing session at Daytona/Talladega. Crew chief wasn't happy with the driver, driver thought the car & crew were all wrong. Driver parks it and crew chief takes it out... and goes faster than the star driver.

Rumor was it was Evernham & Jeffypoo.

Anyone remember this?

(at least my "no facts, ma'am" story wasn't slanderous or mean and won't cost anyone their job)

I can't speak to this one but I do remember Jeff talking about being a little slower on laps where somebody keyed the headset and talked to him while he was on the track back when he was the featured speaker at the '93 Knoxville Nationals press conference. He had to get used to people talking to him while he was on the track. Another story he told was that one time he thought he was going to be cute and pull the chair out from under Earnhardt as he was getting ready to sit down during a drivers meeting but he got caught and Dale was less than amused to put it nicely. The ironic thing was that Jeff talked about having just hot lapped at the brickyard among others and one year later he won the damned thing :-)!
