The track announcer explained that Steve O. and Cory came up with a pill-draw-and-points-race format to make up for the late arrivals and lack of regular qualifying. Drivers earned points for both finish positions and passing in the heats, then similar points in the two "qualifying" races, utlimately deciding the starting order.

Danny Faria (driving his winged car without the wings) either got lucky or figured out how to start the main on the outside of the front row. The starting order for the main was Miller -- Faria, Stidham -- Sheridan, Bragg -- Spencer, C. Williams -- R. VanderWeerd in the first eight.

The Williams brothers crashed out together in the first lap, possibly effecting Jones's car the remainder of the race (he was never in contention).

The order at the lap four yellow, after Bragg's first spin, was Miller, Stidham (the USAC Western 360s hot shoe right now, but running a 410 in this show) and Faria. At lap 12 it was Miller, Faria, Stidham and Showtime. Spencer's right rear had gone flat, but he was able to get back in the field at the end thereof. Bragg went around again on lap 22 with the order at the time being Miller, Mitchell, Stidham and Showtime. Faria pulled into the infield and parked at about lap 20.

Mitchell was able to run against the turn one / turn two wall, which appears to be a major advantage at Tulare lately. But Stidham, who has a lot of very successful, recent experience at the T-Bowl, stayed low and after swapping positions with Mitchell now and again, lead the rest of the field as Miller was able to pull away all by himself after ever yellow. Good racing for all postions except the lead.

Came up with a format? That format is basically the same format run at all ASCS TNT races and the Chili Bowl.

They ran a "1-1/2" sanction show. CRA + eight of the vintage super-modifieds (exhibition). So not a lot of people in the stands =or= at the back gate, though the City of Temecula was, as usual, well represented by the Spencers and their legions of pals.

This was the last show of the "spring series" at Tulare. Accordoing to their website, they go dark throughout the long hot summer and kick in again the first week of October with a USAC Western 360 show. They run the big 360 sprint Trophy Cup on the 22nd and 23rd. And don't forget the big USAC National (sprint and midget) + CRA "Pacific Coast Nationals" show Nov 13.

He dropped a 410 in for last night. Heard him say it was his first non-wing 410 race. Pretty impressive.

Congrats to Blake Miller, been a tough run for him lately.

Good show for only 19 cars.
