ASCS2 Stars Shine Bright at Creek County

Cody Morris, SAPULPA, OK. (May 21 2010) Clear skies, warm temps, and Emmett Hahn Promotions welcomed race fans to the first of 3 stand alone ASCS2 events at the newly reconfigured Creek County Speedway. Sixty Six cars filled the pits for the event featuring the inaugural running of the newly formed ASCS2 Midget series.

Fourteen year old Collinsville, Oklahoma native Tyler Thomas led all 20 laps to earn his place in the history books as the very first ASCS2 Midget main event winner. Thomas started outside front row in the main event, utilizing the high side to take the lead, as Washington state native and fifth place starter Gary Taylor moved into the 2nd spot by the fifth lap. By the midway point in the race, Kevin Bayer would begin to challenge Blake Hahn for the 3rd position. But a Blake Hahn spin would bring out the feature’s first caution flag. Gary Taylor would immediately apply pressure to Thomas coming out of the caution, but with 5 laps to go the feature’s 2nd and final caution would wave for John James’ injured mount. Gary Taylor would retire his smoking mount with engine woes, Blake Hahn would also retire with difficulty. Coming out of the final restart, Thomas developed a considerable lead over Bayer, but the show position would be hotly contested amongst and between Alex Sewell, Matt Ward, Richard Kreise, and Billy Lawhead. Coming down to the inaugural checkered flag of ASCS2 Midget competition, Tyler Thomas would take the 6 car length win aboard his Alpine Stars, Bell Helmets, Thriller Photo, BT Powdercoat No. 91 Factor One machine over the reigning 2009 ASCS2 Outlaw Champion Kevin Bayer. The win marked Tyler’s 1st midget victory in only his 3rd career midget start. Matt Ward would storm his way into the show position after starting 9th. Alex Sewell and Billy Lawhead would take 4th and 5th, respectively. Richard Kreise, Lance Brown, Blake Hahn, Gary Taylor, and John James would round out the remainder of the starting field. Sewell and Bayer took heat race honors, with Blake Hahn and Tyler Thomas splitting qualifier wins.

In ASCS2 Outlaw Division action, an opening lap caution for a Chance Terrell and Eric Fenton mishap on the front straight would negate the start. Pole sitter Andrew Felker would rocket into the lead over the No. 52 of Blake Hahn and hold the spot until a caution at the halfway point for a broken Brandon Hahn mount would bunch the field once more. Brandon Hahn would be done for the night. While Felker led, the balance of the top 5 at the feature’s halfway point would be comprised of Blake Hahn, Christopher Bell, Stanley Kriesel, and 10th starter Frank Flud. The top 5 largely stayed intact until a lap 17 yellow flag for Michael Wickham, who came to a stop while battling with Donnie Ray Crawford for the 6th position. The mishap would negate, at least for the moment, Wickham’s hard charging effort from 20th to 6th. The final caution would come on lap 19 after turn 1 contact between Layne Heimbaugh and Jonathan Byer. The lap 19 top 5 cross the finish line in order with the 17 year old Carl Junction, Missouri pilot taking his 1st ASCS2 Outlaw win at Creek County Speedway. Currently 2nd in 2010 ASCS2 Outlaw points, Oklahoma City native Christopher Bell would cross the stripe 2nd, with Stanley Kriesel, Frank Flud, and Donnie Ray Crawford rounding out the top 5 of the 25 lap A Feature. Felker, Bell, and Riley Adair topped heat race action for the 21 car Outlaw field.

In ASCS2 Non Wing action, Donnie Ray Crawford and Alex Sewell would lead the field to the green, but it would be inside 2nd row starter Andrew Deal immediately applying pressure to Crawford for the lead. Deal would apply constant pressure throughout the race, trying the high side several times to get around the very accomplished Crawford, who also currently sits 5th place in ASCS Sooner Region points. The No. 73 Alex Sewell occasionally threw his hat into the fray as well, at times making it a 3 car battle for the top spot. But after weathering the repeated challenges throughout the race as the Broken Arrow, OK native and past Tulsa Shootout King, as well as former ASCS2 champion would take the win in a non stop 20 lap affair. Deal and Sewell would come across the stripe second and third, respectively. Fifth starter Matt Ward and seventh starter Christopher Bell would round out the top 5 of the main event. Alex Sewell and Donnie Ray Crawford topped heat race action for the 17 car field.

In ASCS2 Restricted action, Blake Jenkins and Will Harvey would lead the field to the green, with Harvey setting a blistering pace to stretch out a sizeable lead. But a lap 6 caution for a Riley Kriesel spin in turn 4 would bring the field back into single file order. But the opening start would not be repeated, as Jenkins would keep Harvey within his sights and rocket into the lead with 5 laps remaining. The 11 year old, Benton, Arkansas I-30 Speedway regular would never concede the point again en route to his 1st career ASCS2 Restricted win aboard his Car & Fleet, Landers Harley Davidson, Robert Jenkins Trucking sponsored No. 89. Will Harvey appeared headed for a 2nd place finish, but bad luck struck at a terrible time as he spun to a stop coming out of turn 4 on the final lap. Karley Kay Dobson would steal the 2nd position, with Dylan Wickham, Dalton Wisely, and Chance Morton rounding out the top 5 for the 15 lap affair. Will Harvey and Chance Morton topped heat race action for the 16 car field.

ASCS2 and Emmett Hahn Promotions would like to thank each of the fans, as well as the 66 participants and their supporters for their participation in this great event.

The ASCS2 midgets will be back in action tomorrow night, Saturday, May 22nd at Lawton Speedway. Gates open at 6pm with action set to go green at 8pm. General admission is $12, Senior citizens $7, Kids 12-15 are also $7, kids 6-11 are $2, kids 5 and under are free. Pit Passes are 25$.

The Outlaw, Non Wing, and Restricted classes of the American Small Car Series will be back in action next weekend for a Memorial Day triple header with Port City Raceway hosting the series Friday, May 28 as well as Saturday, May 29. The series will return to Creek County Speedway for the weekend finale Sunday, May 30. Further details, as well as a preview, will be posted soon.

Thanks fellas. For my first time doing it in this fashion I was happy with how it turned out. It gave me a good base foundation to build on and/or tweak here and there in the future. I had a blast doing them and watching the great racing too.

And hey Wescoe...........as long as you prove to be as helpful as you were friday wink LOL.

I just hope more folks get out to see these really good races. Especially you Randy! I'm going to keep occasionally hounding you until you do Smile

Please don't forget to tune back into www.ascs2racing.com - as a Memorial Day preview is in the works and will be posted extremely soon. Also, I will be posting recaps from the ASCS2 Triple header at Port City Raceway this coming friday and saturday, as well as the sunday finale at Creek County Speedway.
