HUNT OPENS WESTERN SPRINT TITLE DEFENSE IN SATURDAY’S “GERHARDT CLASSIC” AT MADERA
Tony Hunt of Lincoln, Calif. eyes Saturday’s “Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic” at Madera (Calif.) Speedway as the first step toward his sixth USAC driving title. He was the winner of the race last year when it was contested at Stockton, Calif.
The three-time defending (2001, ‘04 and ‘06) series titlist also won USAC’s 1992 Russell Pro crown and a 2002 Western Regional Sprint Car championship. Only seven drivers in USAC’s 52-year history have more titles. They are A.J. Foyt (13), Rich Vogler and Sleepy Tripp (9), Mel Kenyon (8), Michael Lang (7) and Shorty Templeman and Steve Butler (6).
Saturday’s Sprint car feature on the 1/3-mile paved oval is a 50-lapper. The USAC Midgets share the program, with a 100-lap feature on tap.
