Shane Carson at the 1984 Knoxville Nationals. If I remember right Shane was leading one of the preliminary night features before a lapped car got in his way, he looped the car and lost a few spots?

Yeah, I seem to remember an almost "dead-heat" and an "officials" ruling giving the win to Brad Doty.
I could be wrong on that, but I do know it was a heck of a race! Maybe Shane will come on and give us the real story.

Look at the size of that tail tank. A 50 gal cell could easily fit in that space, and make the car look like a sprint car and go 50 laps without a stop.

Good memories!
The Kilpatrick/Connell car was a sharp piece, niece equipment. I recall them also having Richard Tharp on the team, he of drag racing and NITRO expertise. Anyone other than me remember the Open Wheel article about nitro and Mr. Tharp being quoted.?
The 51 took its color scheme from Smiley's Rio midget (driven by Ken Schrader among others) and was one fast car, especially when it stayed in Texas to pick on the locals (like our team). They sure were fast at Lone Star.
Seeing this car made me think of another fast (and red) car from the era from Texas. Blazer Plumbing 7 from Houston. Tim Green did the WoO circuit in the car. I remember a summer WoO race back in the day at the Bowl when there were 2 or 3 Blazer cars, believe Rick Hood was in one.
Sharp machinery! Nice photo!
