ASCS Canyon Region Inks Perris Dates
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (March 31, 2010) – The American Sprint Car Series already sanctions Sprint Car racing events from Florida to New York and Arizona to Washington state, covering the vast majority of the United States.
Now, the popular series is set to encroach upon California soil for the first time with the announcement of a pair of ASCS Canyon Region events at the PAS, Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, CA.
The lone wingless series under the ASCS banner, the ASCS Canyon Region was originated in 2007 and has since set the standard for non-wing Sprint Car racing in Arizona.
Now, the stout Arizona contingent of ASCS Canyon Region competitors will take on the California forces at Perris Auto Speedway on two occasions with events scheduled on May 22 and July 17.
“Perris Auto Speedway has been the premier destination for Wingless Sprint Car racing on the West Coast for the last 14 years, so the addition of a pair of ASCS Canyon Region events at the famed ½-mile clay oval is a natural fit,” commented ASCS President and founder Emmett Hahn.
With the addition of the two PAS events in southern California, the 2010 slate of events for the ASCS Canyon Region now consists of 17 nights of competition with another September date to be determined. Thirteen nights of action are in Arizona, including ten at Tucson’s USA Raceway and three at Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park, with a Fourth of July weekend double at New Mexico’s Aztec Speedway also on the slate.
In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of eleven different Regions throughout the nation.
Additional information regarding the American Sprint Car Series is available at www.ascsracing.com. Posted 3/31/2010 |

HEY turn4rob, THOSE UNDER POWERED SLUGS ARE 410 SPRINT CAR.
HEY KOP, you are so right on this, I called this move last year. Look for move ASCS races at Perris and other tracks in California with some good car count.
Wingless sprint car fans should love this, I know I will love it.

They were 360's 2 weeks ago when I saw em run, and they'll be 360's when they get to Perri's.
Half the lies they tell about me aren't true.

My comment to Rob was due to the fact they are 360's coming to Perris. As far as my "just the beginning" comment, lets just say that the "wind swirls in multiple directions".

What is to love - no qualifying and pill draws? I can't love that...

They are expecting a pretty good car count, at least for the May 22nd race. With USAC/CRA and VRA off that weekend, could be 50+ cars.

First on guys sorry about the 410 remark, was oping for 410 not 360.
Tripcrwn, I agree with you, I like qualifying and hate pill draw but it is coming. If you look around the country, as I have, some track have gone with no qualifying and some big $$$ races have too. Back east usac has been doing it too with some midgets and sprint car races. Ventura does not do qualifying for the usac midgets and always trys to not do qualitying for the sprints. At the last cra race at perris we had stock cars with with us. The tracks need more fans in the grandstands and more bodies thru the back gate. More cars like sprints, stock cars and etc. on the some night, I think, no qualifying is coming but I hope not only time will tell. Bottom line we all have to support are sprint cars, I know I will.

I agree. Qualifying is something that I grew up watching as my father always made a point to get to the track early to watch and listen to the engines (he was a mechanic). We couldn't be late as that was a very important part of the night for him and of course, so many years later, it is for me. To me it is a very exciting part of the night, particularly at Perris. The drivers attacking the track on their two lap runs is something that I enjoy and Scott makes the whole evening enjoyable. Also, it gives me a chance to see who is there and it seems there is always a surprise or two.
I am a big supporter of Perris and if it takes a couple of classes of stock cars to bring in additional fans - then that is the way it has to be. I very much want the track to be successful and besides watching Mike Kirby race is an added bonus. I prefer the all open wheel shows of the past though and hopefully more are planned.
No qualifying maybe coming, but it's not going to stop me from supporting one of the very best racing facilities in the country and its brave sprint car drivers.

Put in (he was a racer) instead of mechanic for my dad, and of course Manzy and Ascot instead of Perri's (at least for now) and I could have wrote that.
Now if we could just get the 50+ year old tradition of the west coast (and of course AZ) against "them" back, I'd be one happy man!
Traditional sprints should be run in the traditional way, with qualifying!
Thanks Trip,
Kenny

It seems all of us race fans were influenced one way or another by our fathers. My early memories were about a small track in Washington state and then later in life Stockton Speedway, San Jose Speedway, West Capital and Calistoga. When open wheel race cars with wings were called super modifieds... And sprint cars were just that - traditional sprint cars.
