Scruffy at Knoxville in 1983. A perfect day for Bobby, the sun is shining and its dry slick.

I wonder if that is the Miner from right outside Chambersburg. Bobby certainly got it done his way with little money and beat the best. I used to boo him since he ran the bottom but it is amazing how long he lasted without the big bucks.
Luna's Ford engine style that won 2 WoO titles and 3
Kings Royals before a weight rule against the best EVER
in their prime and now DOMINATES super dirt late model
racing is no longer allowed/wanted in a WoO sprint
car.... Was Luna a miracle worker?

Scruffy did more with less than pretty much anyone that comes to mind on a national level.
He was THE MAN when it came to time trials... awesome. Always had it figured out ahead of everyone early in the night.
The televised daytime race he won at the Bowl in roughly '84 or so... that was classic. Sammy blew through what seemed the entire field and 3/4 of the people thought he won. I remember my dad saying "I can't believe Sammy won that!" and me saying "he didn't, Dad. Bobby Allen did."
His face looked like I just grew 4 additional heads that were purple, green, zebra striped and... yellow.
The little engine that could!!!
Watching Scruffy's 2a and 3a teams (Lupo & Stambaugh as I recall) scrounge over parts and tires left behind by the other racers on the ground in the pits... that looked like hungry sharks attacking a guppy. It was borderline comical.
My father had breakfast one day at the Day's Inn in Mesquite (used to be THE place to see race cars when the WoO was in town) sitting with Laverne Nance, Doug Wolfgang and Scruffy. What any of us would have done to be a fly on the wall for a minute! That was one of Dad's favorite stories. Dad felt pretty underqualified to sit with them but they couldn't have been nicer.
THANK YOU for the Bobby Allen pic.

I agree with you Guy in Texas. Scruffy and Opperman did more with less than any of the others, and beat a lot of the high $ teams. Just think what they both could have done with a high $ sponser. Can you say dominate??

Could not agree more. Back when being a mechanical genius could actually give you an edge, Scruffy was at the top of his game. Like Opperman said, Bobby Allen could've run us all out of the game if he would've kept his secrets to himself.

Didn't Bobby pop a motor at Knoxville in 96? Was that the last year he competed at the Nationals? I seem to remember him running one lap on his qualifying night, going second quick, hurting the motor and was not heard from the rest of the week. Somebody feel free to correct my fading memory. Bill W?

That is correct. It's exactly the example I used when a good friend of mine (who shall remain nameless :-) ) decided to tow all the way from California to Knoxville without a spare motor. I said "don't do it". Of course - as luck would have it - he burned a piston taking the checkered flag on his second lap after puting in two respectable laps for a first timer. I remember seeing Allen's rig during that period ('96) and it was less than tidy. Sammy's head would have split wide open if he had to ride around in that operation just because of what a mess it was. Worked for Scruffy though. Allen is responsible for one of my all time favorite Knoxville moments with his '90 Nationals win.

When Bobby (Scruffy) won a World of Outlaws race at the Devil's Bowl - tears were streaming down my face, I was so excited. I remember "they" said that he cheated by "curing" a tire in an earlier race so it would last and work. I don't know - but it was the first World of Outlaws race I remember him winning. Keep in mind that I am a big Rick Ferkel fan - but Bobby is right up there. It seems like when I went to talk with Bobby he was in about the same state of mind as I was. What a day/night that was. Oh yes - one of Rick's first successful cars was a Bobby Allen chassis - as far as I recall.
