CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING SPRINT CARS KICK OFF 17TH SEASON THIS SATURDAY!
(MARCH 1, 2010, RIVERSIDE, CA) The California Lightning Sprint Car Series will launch its 17th consecutive season of racing this Saturday night, March 6th, at Perris Auto Speedway.
Founded in 1994, the CLS series currently has 20 races on the 2010 schedule. Twelve of the 20 races will be at the series home track, Perris Auto Speedway. Bakersfield Speedway will host the CLS four times, Ventura Raceway will host three races and the series will be making one appearance at Santa Maria Speedway. You can view the full 2010 schedule at the end of this release along with a list of past CLS champions.
Over the years, the California Lightning Sprint Cars have produced a bevy of talent for the west coast's premier Sprint Car Series, USAC/CRA. Last year three of the top five in the USAC/CRA championship point standings were graduates of the Lightning Sprint Car Series. 2009 USAC/CRA champion Mike Spencer, second place finisher David Cardey and fifth place Greg Bragg (a three time Lightning Sprint Car champ) all honed their skills in the Lightning Series before moving on to USAC/CRA.
In 2009, Stuart Hielshier Sr. of Murrieta, California captured his first California Lightning Sprint Car championship. The veteran driver, who won two main events on his way to the crown, will be back to defend his championship in 2010. Other main event winners in the series in 2009 were: Bobby Bender (4), Stuart Hielschier Jr. (3), past series champion Brent Sexton (2), Johnny Bluntach (2), Chris "Crash" Dickey (1), Jarrett Kramer (1), Toby "The Smokin' Okie" Sampson (1), Seth Kramer (1), Tim Moody (1) and David Cardey (1).
Unique to the series, when competing at The PAS, the Lightning Sprint Cars compete on the half-mile and the track's inner quarter-mile track. And, they compete with and without wings. This Saturday night the series will be on the half mile with wings.
The California Lightning Sprint Car Series would like to acknowledge the following sponsors for making the 2010 campaign possible. The Christian Stover Foundation, Performance by Rosson Racing, BK Wings, Circle Track Performance and Hoosier Tires. Anyone wishing to come on board as a series sponsor can call Brent Sexton at: (619) 454-6945.
