Who would you say is the better driver today in equal equipment. And before we answer remember I am not talking about years past.I would have to say Sammy evan though that's hard to say being a huge Kinser fan.

It's really tough to say without them competing against each other day in and day out. But neither of them have anything to prove in my book.

I always thought Sammy was better, past or present doesn't matter, to me. Sammy picked and chosed his schedule through most of his "Outlaw" years. The first year he ran the full WoO deal he won it, back to back. I don't think championships were ever that important to him, he just wanted to win and do it his way, with his setup, his creations and ingenuity.
I may be a little bias, jmo......
The older I get, the faster I used to be.

RebelBubba that is the worst answer possible. That is like saying Jeff Swindell. No offense to either of them but they are not the same caliber. I love Steve but Sammy has always done it his way. Steve had Karl to do some magic but Sammy has had Sammy. Regardless they both have a will to win that is unmatched. Except Wolfgang. In my opinion if Wolfie had not got hurt he would be labeled the best ever.

well steve does still race in the toughest, faster most powerful sprint cars, and does win some against the other BEST drivers, so I would go with Steve, but Sammy is no doubt still top 50, perhaps even top 10 current drivers

Sammy is better versed in car construction and the mechanics I imagine but how many nationals have either one that they were both there? How many races anywhere has either won against the other? I don't know the actual numbers but I bet it's gonna be Steve.
Therefore.......I say Steve "The King" Kinser. As long as we are talking only sprint cars. Throw other forms of racing in the the answer "might" change.

Id say Doug Wolfgang would out do both of them and be a top 5 threat today if he never got burned. He was just starting to come into his prime of his career when that happen.

Oppermanfan, you have been around long enough to know that whenever there is a question regarding "best", "fastest", etc., the answer is ALWAYS Mark Kinser.

They did'nt call him the King for nothing,he got the name in a time when he raced against the best....& beat them all. Sammy can still do it but I believe when they met head to head last year Steve got the best Sammy.TheKing should be on top of his game 2010 if the surgery did it's job. Steve over Sammy..............Mark over Jeff all of them exciting to watch

Steve is was always will be better then Sammy.. thats just a fact...
Now, the best racecar drivers of all time...
Tony Stewart, AJ Foyt, RON SHUMAN, Sammy Swindell and Steve Kinser.. top spot probably to Stewart, ... but if it is strictly sprint cars, then Kinser s the best... hands down..

Sammy will go down as the best driver/mechanic of all time, for any series.

I say Karl Kinser.
As somebody stated, can't argue with either one but I would have to give the slight edge to Sammy as he seems to "step up" in some of the bigger races. I would hire either one of them at their age.

Cool thread!
I could knock some choices but not gonna do it. If you believe in your choice... more power to you.
Apples to apples... in 410s last year I would think Mr. Kinser had the upper hand. That covers the "now" part of the equation. Sammy figured out the 360 deal and competed against the best in the 360 business and did well. He was top-shelf at the Chili Bowl. Ran pretty well in the WoO. Who was better? Depends on what you want to run. In a WoO title run... give me Mr. Kinser.
I liked the "ifs and buts" disclaimers on some of the choices! Bend the rules & reality to prove your point! lol
I couldn't help but like Wolfgang. My personal & family interactions with him were absolute 1st class. It's tough for me to compare him to the other 2 parts of the Big 3 for a lot of reasons... namely yes, he ran the whole WoO circuit at times... but he was an Outlaw's Outlaw. Running for DP and for Weikert... his 2 big years... they ran all over the place with whomever paid $$$ and won. Hard to say that those 2 teams couldn't win the title those years IF they ran for points.. .but they didn't.
It's also hard to say Wolfgang was coming into his own or getting better when Lakeside's calamity occurred. I disagree entirely. He was good... but he wasn't "Weikert/DP" great at the time.

First of all...WOW, what a great forum question! I smell an article in the next SCM or Flatout about this question.
Second, the question needs to be more specific. We are talking about just sprint cars right?
If so, just check their head to head results this past year.
If we are talking about mechanically, swindell.
If we are talking about back in the day drivers which we are not, its still kinser. Doug was awesome, but he still wasn't no steve kinser. Doug Wolfgang and sammy are the reason steve kinser is so great. Because he was whooping up on regular drivers. He was constantly beating the best.
