The only year that Steve won the Nationals not in the 11 sprinter.
Steve wrecked the 11 car Wednesday night, but Bob Trostle teamed up with Karl Kinser and Steve jumped into the 20x Trostle/Vice-Grip sprinter.
Check out the size of the left rear...

I believe that was the year Sammy vacated the Fed-Ex 91. He was suppose to start in the first couple rows and split with the Owner C.J. Jefferys at 10:00 am that morning. I don't know the reason though, anyone know that one?

Ah, the year of the Saturday night "fog-out"; the fog rolled in and the races were postponed until Sunday afternoon.......

I think that was the Nationals that was Mike Brooks of Knoxville to lose. He had them covered the whole week and the fog out happened and the rest is history.

I think Bob said 6" of stagger with Firestone Diamonds. Don't remember the compound but Steve burned up both in three laps of hot laps trying to get them hot. Put on a something else that didn't have the 6". While the race continued Dale Drottz mounted up another pair (pre-bead lock days!) and on one of the reds they changed, like everyone else was doing. Went to front. Bob was confident because he had the best dry slick driver in the business in his car.

Sammy had qualified for the Nationals in the front row possibly the pole that year and word around the campfire was he was fired on the spot at 10am for giving his brother Jeff a tire or tires from the federal express camp. I remember people walking around scratching there heads that year wondering why Sammy would of quit a car that was in the show

No rock guard. No high backed seat or head and neck restraints of any kind..hell no neck roll at all.
These were the times of Wheelmen. A crash meant a better chance of sustaining injuries, which led to the drivers being more careful and having to have car control down to an artform, and greater respect for a fellow driver. Sure, the times according to the clock were slower, but hell if that wasn't the Golden Age of racing. Nowadays, you've got guys in cocoons with a pillow on top driving like they are superhuman with some having zero respect for a fellow driver. Not to mention most drivers back then were in their mid to late 20's and had earned their Sprint Car Wings or paid some dues before getting there. Wheelmen are few and far between nowadays.

Okay, got some more info from Bob on the tire deal. The tires they put on after the hot lap problem only had 1-1/2 to 2" of stagger and he fell back to 5th. Joe Saldana flipped and Dale had gotten the replacements mounted by then and they changed. What they put on was a 10-5-30 drag tire on the left rear and a Firestone Champ Diamond on the right rear. It measured about 100" with 20 lbs of air. The left was 94", maybe 94-1/2". Hope I took the notes correctly. Bob has a steel trap memory and remembers everything like it was yesterday.
