Got an email saying that Billy Patton Sr. passed away last night. I remember him driving the #00 Silver Safeway Taxi car in the modified division.
My condolences to the Patton Family.

There will be grave side service at 10:am Monday at Rest Haven.
He will be avaiable for veiwing after 10:00am Saturday at Rest Haven Funeral Home.

The six cylinder modified class was so strong back in the day. It took Shane Carson several weeks just to make it into the A main. Car counts were high and experience amongst the drivers was tough.
Crowd counts were high too. One opening night had 8,000 plus in the stands, just ask Uncle A.
Look in the back and you will see a Vicky bodied car, double 00. Billy was so tough, and high in the points, he had to start in the back most times. In short order he would be at the front, leading the hunt.

On one occasion a kid had drawn a picture of his car Bess, sent it to Billy asking him to autograph it for him. In those days a kid might see a driver on his level like a superstar.
Billy not only autographed the pic, he delivered it personally. Yes at the time, it was a big deal for that family.

Sorry to hear about the passing of Billy Patton Sr........didn't know the man personally, but remember watching him, Billy Patton Jr. and even Roy Patton in the #501 (if I remember correctly pretty little kid back then) racing in Enid.........Yes the good 'ol days!!!!! with lots of fond memories

Billy will be sorely missed. He always had time for us Kids and was quite the character.

My late uncle Doc [Elmer Murrah] was his crewchief for many years and as a young kid [I am 43 now] I built a model car in an exact replica of his 00 car. His son Billy Jr is a customer of mine at Classic Auto Group here in Okc. It saddens me to learn of his passing as he was a true champion of dirt track racing. and not just at State Fair Speedway in Okc but at many other tracks around.
