ALL COAST CHALLENGE MONEY UP FOR GRABS AT VENTURA by Lee Elder
VENTURA, Calif. (Oct. 7, 2009) – The third and final installment of the 2009 All Coast Construction Challenge is set for Oct. 24 at Ventura Raceway and the event promises to make a compelling night of racing.
The three-race series includes a separate points system worth $5,000 to the overall winner and the race on the 24th promises $5,000 more for the winner, $2,000 for second place and another $1,000 for third. If Saturday’s winner also claims the Challenge purse, that driver can win $10,000.
The Challenge, now in its second year, is the brainchild of All Coast Construction executive Mike Grosswendt.
“This race is for the kind of teams that scrape just to get to the track every week,” Grosswendt said. “That’s who this is for, the weekly regulars at Ventura. At the same time, we want to help attract drivers from around the West with a signature event.”
The three-race points purse gives track regulars a chance to pick up a nice check at the end of the season and the single-race purse is expected to attract some all-stars. Forty sprint cars entered last weekend’s race as regional drivers entered for the purpose of preparing for the Challenge this week.
“We’ll probably have fifty sprint cars here for the All Coast race, maybe more,” Raceway promoter Jim Naylor said. “We’ll probably have an all-star lineup in the semi main.”
The top sprint car drivers in the west, including Ventura’s own Cory Kruseman have indicated they plan to race at Ventura on Saturday. Others expected to compete include Danny Sheridan, Danny Faria and ‘Bullet’ Blake Miller.
Kevin Kierce holds a slender, 10-point lead over Troy Rutherford in the All Coast standings and the same two guys are in the midst of a classic wrestling match for the 2009 track championship. Kierce missed a chance to lock the title away last week and has to try again this week at a time when the pits will be jammed with the top drivers in the region.
Steve Conrad is third in the All Coast Challenge standings.
