I was reminded of this when I was reading another guest-book. It was I believe 1968. I can still see this tire coming off the super of Herb Copeland #8. The tire bounced and bounced over the fence. This was the old low fence It didn't have the catch fence to help catch tires from doing this. We were setting about 10 to 15 rows up toward the north end, about the 2nd section from the north. It was more the middle of the whole track. Your mind does play tricks on you and I beleive I can still picture this, but maybe my mind is tying to reinact it.

When it was all said and done Steven Hasty from the Arkansas City, KS was taken from us at the age of nine years old. He was down in the grassy area between the grandstand and the track playing with another boy, John Cain of Hutchinson. John was severely injured and I believe was pararlyzed.

In Memory of Steven Hasty!

After I posted this I did a search and this article says it was 1965. I always related it to 1968 and Herb came back in 1969 to win the nationals. See Your mind can play tricks on you.

Bob Lawrence's new adventure in preserving the past is what started this thread.

Now maybe I can relate to why I have always thought the above accident happened in 1968. In 1968 Bill Dye of Colorado Springs, CO lost a tire on the straightaway. I don't know if it jumped the fence also???

If you don't visit the above site Bob is putting together your missing out on one of the best!
