Last
Weekend for Lunstra/Dobmeier Motorsports in '09 – Feature Win and
Track Championship
9/21/09
It has been a long season for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports and it came to an end this past weekend starting with a
World of Outlaw show that was held at the Clay County Fair in
Spencer, IA.
Mark qualified 12th on the grid with a time
of 13.703 against the 32 other first class sprint cars to set the
pace for the evening which allowed him to start on the front row of
the heat race. Mark lost a couple spots early on in the heat
to put him back to fourth by the time the checkered flew.
He started 15th in the main with his Senske
& Son Forx Radiator #13 and made it up to eleventh early,
before a red flag was thrown.
“The car’s working great,” says Mark sitting in the
car waiting for the flagman to throw the yellow, “I just have to
bide my time, we certainly have a fast race car.”
Mark felt pretty confident throughout the first few
laps of the main, but after the red, the car wasn’t right.
Dobmeier struggled after the red and fell back to 18th.
The team wasn’t quite sure what had happened to the Senske & Son
Dekalb Seed #13, but according to team co-owner Dave Lunstra, “It
was one of those nights where it just wasn’t our night!”
The team packed up and headed back north to race the
final race of the season at their home track of River Cities
Speedway in Grand Forks, ND.
Dobmeier clinched the Points Championship at River
Cities by racing from last to 3rd in the heat and from
eighth to the top spot in the main.
“We were right on all night,” explains Dobmeier.
“Once again the guys gave me an awesome car to drive and the track
allowed us to pass…It was just a fun night! I would like to
thank all of our supporters here at River Cities; this season like
many of the past seasons here has been great. I really enjoy
this place.”
Following the wins of both the main event and the
Points Championship at River Cities, the team headed to Deer Creek
Speedway in Minnesota to race with the World of Outlaws one more
time before the end of the ’09 season.
“We qualified 9th and started on the
outside pole in the heat,” mentions Dobmeier. “We took the lead
early and led it to the end.”
Mark started 9th in the Crane Cams Dash and
was able to advance himself up to sixth after passing the 6 car of
Danny Lasoski.
The finish in the dash lines the top ten cars for the
main event with the World of Outlaws and with Mark’s sixth place
finish, he started on the outside of the third row for the 35 lap
main event with Terry McCarl right behind him in eighth.
At the start of the race, Dobmeier began racing hard
against Jason Sides. The car was working great and looking
good, but with 12 or so laps into the “Sprint for a Cure Summer
Clash,” Dobmeier went into turn one a little hard and jumped the
short cushion and put the Senske & Sons Dammer Brothers #13
into the wall with Terry McCarl following right behind.
“I am sure the two of us looked like ‘synchronized
flippers’,” laughs Dobmeier. “I just made a driving error and
got into the corner a little too hot! It’s really too bad, we
had an awesome car and I think we could of made a top five finish
fairly easily. The guys’ worked hard like they always do, but
tonight was my fault. I love this racetrack, and I can’t wait
to come here next year. But, we’ll get the car fixed and be
ready for Cheater’s Day (Huset’s Speedway) tomorrow.”
$10, 000 was on the line for Lunstra/Dobmeier
Motorsports at the 45th Annual Cheater's Day this past Sunday night
at Huset’s Speedway. Going into the night, the team was
confident as ever as they have all ready clinched the Points
Championship and have won 5 times this season on the high banked
3/8ths mile oval.
Dobmeier posted an 11.143 on the board in his
qualifying effort which was 7th out of the field of 17
and starting third in the heat, Mark quickly took the lead and left
the pack to earn the heat victory.
Dobmeier lined up sixth for the start of the main
event, but right at the beginning the right rear tire started to go
down. With only two laps into the race Mark pulled in and the
crew hurried with a new right rear Hoosier.
From the back of the pack, following the tire change,
“Dynamite” Dobmeier charged through the field and up to sixth
behind the Sunnyvale, Texas native, Sam Hafertepe, Jr.
“I can’t complain,” says Mark. “We cut our right
rear at the start, which put us behind the eight ball, but there’s
not much you can do about that. I drove my (tail) off to
climb back through the field and finishing here with a sixth is
pretty gratifying.”
