Agreed Rob, he was giving the Ripper all he could handle.

If not mistaken I believe that Guitierrez traveled to Indiana this past summer for a few weeks and did pretty well. I think he was also hurt back there, so if true glad to see him back racing. No doubt he was down for a trial run prior to the Oval Nationals. I believe he competes at Ocean Speedway and still a teenager. Anyone have any more knowledge about this young driver? Your right Rob he was impressive.

Wes Gutierrez is the real deal! That kid has amazing courage and with a bit of polish will definitely be a household name soon. I was amazed when I saw him run up at Tulare earlier this year, keeping up with the USAC/CRA regulars with a 360. Talking with him in the pits, I realized what a neat person he is off the track as well.

Gary Costa has kept us up to date with some recent misfortunes and injuries. His team took a midget to Indiana earlier this summer and he took a nasty tumble on the first or second night of the week's racing. Took a trip to the hospital for observation. Didn't keep in out of the cockpit for long though.

Then, just weeks ago at Hanford's Kings Speedway, he went for another violent ride. I don't think the video clip that I saw told just how hard he must have hit, because when I talked with him in the pits last night at PAS he still had a case of red eye.

Last night was his first ever 410 race without a wing. Anyone (including me) who watched him dual with Ripper and who witnessed those daring passes on the outside would have thought he had raced with these guys for years. He was very complimentary of the caliber of the USAC/CRA. He told me that he really enjoyed himself and has a new respect for how clean (and forgiving...no retaliation from accidental rubbing) his competitors were with him last night. He's planning to return to PAS in October to tune up for the Oval Nationals, which he will be entering this year in the 007 entry.

Keep an eye on this kid...he and Kyle Larson could just be the future of this sport!

Thanks for the information Doug. I don't think I've ever seen a driver as impressive as Gutierrez was last night in his first visit to the PAS. Hard to believe it was his first 410 race. Wow, what's going to happen when he really gets driving the 410 at the PAS down. I can't wait to see him perform next month and at the Oval Nationals in November.

I've seen Wes run a bunch up here (norcal) with a wing on this year. He has ran most of the GLR series at Watsonville in a 360, and also most of the Civil War Series. I also know he ran a winged 410 pts race at Chico and a GSC race at Placerville. He was improving week by week with the lid on top and it is definitely good to be versatile.

Hey Doug, will Larson be running the Oval Nationals and then the Thunderbowl's Pacific Coast Nationals? He must realize that his next step would be to run wingless in the Midwest, right? Thanks for the above info.

Trip...I believe that is the plan, but not 100% sure. Last time I spoke to Kyle was at Tulare a few months ago. At that time, he was really excited about Calistoga, Oval Nationals, and the PCNs at Tulare. After the run he had at Calistoga, I'm sure that Dave and Debbie Vertullo and team are just as amped as Kyle about doing some more non-winged shows! I hope they make the tows, because I can't wait to see him run with the best in the nation "traditional" style...

It should be exciting. Heading to the Midwest to run with USAC and other sprint car sanctioning bodies seems to be the way to a NASCRAP development deal. I will be pulling for this young driver. That is part of the excitement that make sprint car racing so special - being able to watch these young guns develop into the big wheels of the future. Thanks again Doug for your insights. Smile
